Judith Ellen Brooks (née Serene), of Ellwood City, passed away peacefully at her home on the morning of August 15, 2025, surrounded by her extensive and ever-growing family. She was born on January 14, 1939, in Cadogan, PA, to the late James and Alda Serene.
Raised in Kittanning, PA, Judy attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. On August 17, 1957, she married the love of her life, Dr. Jack C.W. Brooks. For more than 30 years, Judy was Jack’s “Girl Friday” at their medical practice on 26 Pittsburgh Circle in Ellwood City, where they worked side-by-side as a devoted team.
Judy is survived by her six children: Jane (Tony) Colangelo, Elizabeth (Scott) Patton, Anne Main, Jack (Genine) Brooks, Jennifer (Jay) Behm, and Kathleen (Rhue) Mulhollen; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Jane (Brooks) Kocher of Ellwood City. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack; her grandchild, “Baby Benjamin” Brooks; and her siblings, sisters Ora and Lorraine, and brothers Frank and Robert.
Judy lived a life full of adventure and love. She and Jack traveled the globe, made a home on a beautiful farm, and enjoyed their cherished cottage on the Allegheny River in the wilds of Pennsylvania. She had an unmatched love of babies and a special gift for making each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren feel treasured, known, and adored. She was known for her warm hospitality, showering her family with love, laughter, and hugs. Friends will remember her for her affection for a good party, as she hosted countless elaborate gatherings with her many lifelong friends.
She was a faithful and generous member of Calvin Presbyterian Church in Ellwood City and a longtime volunteer and supporter of the Ellwood City Library.
Her family will forever miss her contagious laugh, big smile, open arms, and welcoming home. While they may not miss her playful command to “Wersh the dishes!,” they will always cherish the way she said it.
Friends will be received on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and on Thursday August 21, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until the Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. at the Marshall Funeral Home, Ellwood City. Dr. Sean Brubaker will officiate. An Eastern Star Service will be held at 10:45 a.m. Interment will follow at Rockland Cemetery in Rockland, PA, where Judy will rest forever beside her beloved Jack.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ellwood City Library or Calvin Presbyterian Church in Ellwood City.
