It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of Judith M. Mitchell aged 77, of Schererville Indiana passed away peacefully on June 11, 2025 in Crown Point Indiana surrounded by loved ones.
Judith was born on August 16, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois at Mercy Hospital to John and Eleanor Copeland. She grew up in South Chicago where she attended Bowen High school and went on to work as a Receiving clerk at Solo Cup for 15 years.
Throughout her life Judy was known for her kindness, sense of humor and love for her family. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the center of her life. She enjoyed crocheting, cooking for her family in her earlier years and gaming with her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Mitchell; grandchildren, Riley Strain, Sarah (Thaddeus) Siebert, Renato (Kaylin) Strain, and Anthony Strain; great-grandchildren, Hunter, Evie, Allie, Elliana, and Olivia; and sister, Gloria (late Roger) Mitchell. Judith was preceded in death by her grandmother, Ollie Spencer; mother, Eleanor Spencer-Copeland; father, John Copeland; and siblings, William Copeland, Shirley Copeland-Shaffer, Gerald Copeland, and Richard "Ricky" Copeland.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday June 17, 2025 at Burdan Funeral Home, 12901 Wicker Avenue, Cedar Lake, Indiana. Visitation will be from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm with a memorial service beginning at 6:00 pm. In honor of Judith's memory, the family asks in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be made to help support the family during this difficult time.
