Judith Moore Romans, 89, of Owensboro, passed away Friday, March 13, 2026, at the Heartford House while under the truly outstanding care of Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky. She was born on November 6, 1936, in the family home in Island, KY to the late Archie Robert Moore and Louise Brown Moore.
“Jiji,” or “Mama Judy” as she was affectionately known by so many, took humility to an entirely new level—often brushing aside accolades and praise. In a final act of loving rebellion, her children feel it only right to share a glimpse of the remarkable woman she truly was.
Judith was the Valedictorian of her high school class and graduated from Western Kentucky University (BA) and Vanderbilt University /Peabody (MA) with honors and at the age of 23 was appointed the first Dean of Women at WKU. In addition to her work in education, Judy joined a long line of family matriarchs in running the family farms, which she believed to be one of the most honorable professions.
Judith was very involved in many organizations, including working for the Owensboro School System, serving as president of the school PTA, and later President of Owensboro Daviess County PTA Council. She worked with too many booster clubs to count and could often be found working the concession stand at OHS under the Friday night lights. She was very proud of her Junior League work where she served as President and was a founding member of Impact 100. She served on as President on several boards, including the Mary Kendall Home, Elizabeth Mundy Center, was involved with the Daughters of American Revolution, Wendell Foster Center, the Carmel Home and was awarded the ‘Outstanding Citizen’ award by the Civitan Club. Judy had the distinct honor of being a Kentucky Colonel for over 50 years.
Perhaps the most striking aspect of Judy was her commitment to her faith. Baptized in 1944, Judy stayed committed to her walk with the Lord through trials, tribulations and tragedies. Her faith was unshakeable in the face of fear and grief.
Though she may have downplayed her own accomplishments, her legacy speaks volumes. It lives on in the lives she touched, the lessons she imparted, and the faith she shared so freely. To her family, she was nothing short of extraordinary. And while she may no longer be here to deflect the praise, we will carry her story forward—proudly, gratefully, and always with love.
Along with her parents, she was also preceded in death by a most beloved son, Robert Hays Romans.
Judith is survived by her daughter, Renee’ Romans Zaremba; a son, Jared (Julia Mills) Brown Romans; and grandchildren, MacKinnon and Robert “Ben” Zaremba, and Andrew and Laura Romans.
The funeral service for Judith will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 21, 2026, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. Wesley Dunn officiating. Burial to follow in Calhoun Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky 3419 Wathen’s Crossing, Owensboro, KY 42301 or your charity of choice.
