Mrs. Julia Mae Dixon Lawrence, 91, of Indianapolis, Indiana, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 15, 2023.
She was born on July 6, 1931, to Thomas Dixon, Sr. and Mary (Jackson) Dixon.
At an early age, Mrs. Lawrence accepted Christ as her Personal Lord and Savior, at Pine Hill Baptist Church, Phenix City, Alabama, under the leadership of the late Pastor Brown. While singing at Pine Hill Baptist Church, Ms. Lawrence met "The love of her life", Plez Lawrence. They were married on August 15, 1952, and later moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. To their union, three children were born, Terra L. (Lawrence) Hunt, Plez Lawrence, Jr., and Albert Lawrence. Upon arriving in Indianapolis, Mrs. Lawrence joined Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. Pittman. She was an active member of the Mother's Board, Missionary Board, Kitchen Committee, Gospel Chorus, Senior Choir, Mass Choir, The "Bishop" Al Hobbs Choir, and the Gospel Music Workshop of America (GMWA).
Mrs. Julia Mae Dixon Lawrence was known as "Madea", "Aunt Julia", "The Community Mom", and most of all "Grandma". She was employed at Mechanics Laundry for ten years, and later went to work at RCA for eight years, and while employed at RCA, Mrs. Lawrence was able to receive her high school certificate from The Christamore House, here in Indianapolis. Moving on in her life, she also worked at Riley Children's Hospital, where she retired after 22 years of service. Before and after retirement, Mrs. Lawrence continued to work and volunteer with the Foster Grandchildren Program, Election Polls, and Mozel Sanders Foundation. She was also known for her cooking and serving some of the gospel greats, the late Rev. James Cleveland, Inez Andrews, Al "The Bishop" Hobbs, Delores "Sugar" Poindexter, WTLC Radio Personality, and anyone who wanted or needed a meal. Mrs. Lawrence also loved visiting and taking care of the sick and shut-in.
Mrs. Lawrence was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Plez Lawrence; parents, Mr. Thomas Dixon, Sr. and Mrs. Mary (Jackson) Dixon; two sisters, Ms. Willie Lee (Dixon) Jones and Ms. Fannie (Dixon) Caldwell, and six brothers, Mr. Thomas Dixon, Jr., Mr. Walter Lee Dixon, Mr. Alan Dixon, Mr. Bobby Dixon, Mr. Joseph Dixon, and Mr. Andy Dixon.
Mrs. Julia Mae Dixon Lawrence leaves to celebrate and cherish her memories a daughter, Terra L. (Manuel) Hunt, Anderson, Indiana and sons, Plez Lawrence, Jr., Indianapolis, Indiana and Albert L. (Melissa) Lawrence, Indianapolis, Indiana; three sisters, Josephine (Dixon) Allen, Indianapolis, Indiana, Mable Dixon, Indianapolis, Indiana, and Dorothy Dixon, Columbus, Ohio; two brothers, Roy Dixon, El Paso, Texas, David Dixon, Atlanta, Georgia; Godson, Pastor Tony Guthrie, Indianapolis, Indiana; thirteen grandchildren, Olunda K. Hunt, Anderson, IN, Dr. Alunda Evay Hunt, Tucson, Arizona, Minister Yolunda K. (Don'té) Brown, Nashville, Tennessee, Paris (Lawrence) Love, Indianapolis, Indiana, Porsche Lawrence, Indianapolis, Indiana, Plez Lawrence, III, Terre Haute, Indiana, Plezzance Lawrence, Indianapolis, Indiana Monique Lawrence, Indianapolis, Indiana, Mae Lawrence, Indianapolis, Indiana, Lamar Lawrence, Somerset, Kentucky, David Barrett, Indianapolis, Indiana, Jeremiah Jackson, Indianapolis, Indiana, and Tré Cole, Indianapolis, Indiana; sixteen great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren, a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends. She loved her family dearly. Her smile and laughter will truly be missed.
