Julia Matilda Powers

1923 - 2023

2 Corinthians 5: 6-8 " So we are always confident, because we know that while we are living in the body, we are away from our home with the Lord. We live by faith and not by sight. We are confident, and we would prefer to leave the body and to be present with the Lord."
Mrs. Julia Matilda Jones Powers, 99, was born in Iredell County on November 3, 1923, to the late Luther Eckles, and Sarah Holland Jones. She departed this life on Monday, September 4, 2023 at her residence.
Julia was married to Oscar Leroy Powers, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her step-father, Sidney Jones; a granddaughter, Shakarah Toles; eight sisters, Mary Lou Angel, Nettie Grant, Viola Simpson, Diana Mills, Margaret Moore, Alberta Wimple, Frances Dunlap and Elizabeth Joyce; four brothers, Willie Jones, Leander Jones, Garfield Jones and Wilbert Jones
Julia attended school at the Chestnut Grove Elementary School in Statesville and Catawba Rosenwald School in Catawba, NC. She was at one employed as a cook for the Country Kitchen at the Statesville Auto Auction. Julia was a devoted member and Mother of the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church where she served in many areas; Senior Choir, Past President, Assistant Leader, Missionary Circle, Sunday School, and Nurse. She was also a member of the Elks Sklyland Banner Lodge and the Garfield Street Senior Citizens.
She leaves to cherish the memory of her life, a son, Charles Edward Jones of Springfield, Massachusetts; two grandchildren, Tarell Dewberry, and Jakiayah Toles both of Springfield, Massachusetts; two great grandchildren, Shakarah Jack and Amir Jack both of Springfield Massachusetts, a brother-in-law, Nathaniel (JoAnn) Dunlap of Statesville; a special nephew, Ryan (Sara) Jones of Charlotte, NC; three special care givers, Sharon, Pamela and Tara ;and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives, church family, and friends.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. at the church. Pastor Dale Gibson will be officiating the service.
