Julia Sadd of Charleston, WV died November 25, 2009 at the Hubbard Hospice House. She was the daughter of the late Shaker and Asma Sadd and was preceded in death by her brothers Felix and Joseph Sadd; sister Marie Sadd all of Charleston.
Educated in local parochial schools, she received her bachelor’s degree in journalism and did post graduate work at Marshall University.
Her journalism career included staff writer at the Charleston Gazette and United Press International Bureau in Charleston; public/cultural affairs representative for NET in New York City, now PBS; special aide/speechwriter for Gov. Arch Moore in his first two terms; public information director WV Department of Motor Vehicles. For many years she was also correspondent for VARIETY, the national entertainment newspaper.
She later operated her public relations business, The Write Place, and also represented Mazzei and Associates advertising specialities, for many years. Her articles and public relations projects received awards by the National Federation of Press Women, West Virginia Press Association, West Virginia Communicators, Charleston Advertising Club. Her fiction received awards by the West Virginia Writer’s Conference and Audio Images of West Virginia Public Radio Network.
Her children’s fiction was published nationally by Weekly Reader Books, and her non-fiction was published in such magazines as Grit, Venture Inward, Cats and Kittens and Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper. In addition, she was a lyricist/song writer and co-authored an original theatrical musical which was given a workshop performance at the AMAS Repertory Theater in New York City.
Her community involvement included a founder and past board member of the West Side Neighborhood Association; former board member of WV Communicators, Charleston Advertising Club, WV Press Women’s; publicity committee for St. Anthony School Scholarship Awards Dinner. She also served on the 1994 Charleston Comprehensive Plan Committee and helped organize the Charleston chapter of Christmas in April. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church.
She is survived by her niece Susan Sadd of Aliso Viejo, CA; nephew Vincent Sadd and his wife Pat of Cary, NC; niece Felicia McClung and her husband Frank of Sissonville; great nieces Alexis, Stephanie, Sarah, Megan and Kaitlyn; great nephew Jason.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday December 19, 2009 11:00am at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church on Sixth Street, Charleston. A gathering of friends and family will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
