Julia Smith, age 77, passed away on Saturday October 21, 2023
Julia was born in New Britian, Connecticut on April 27, 1946, to parents Samuel and Maezell Smith. She graduated from New Britian Senior High School and would then go on to attend North Carolina Central University. She would then return to Connecticut to start work at Southern New England Telephone Company. During this time, she would give birth to the apple of her eye, her only daughter Sherri Lynn Smith and meet her best friend of over 30 years Maria Patricia Ruddell. After some time and much consideration, Julia would decide to make the move to El Paso, Texas with her daughter. Upon arriving she would begin work at Gibsons and later work in the banking industry as a teller for many years to come. Julia, with a passion for knowledge and a will to achieve greatness began working for Ft. Bliss as a Counselor for Webster University, where while employed she continued to further her education resulting in her being awarded a Bachelor degree of Arts and Master degree of Arts while simultaneously becoming an honorary member of Delta Mu Delta. Julia was an accomplished, ingenious, and caring person that loved to read and spend time with her grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents Samuel and Maezell Smith, brothers Sam Jr, Roosevelt and Eugene Smith, and close friend Maria Patricia Ruddell. She is survived by daughter Sherri (Christopher) Small of El Paso, Texas, grandchildren Fatima Smith of Thorton, Colorado, and Aiden Small of El Paso, Texas, sister Mattie Jenkins of Columbus, Ohio, brothers Aaron Smith of New Britian, Connecticut, and Marvin Smith (Roselyn C Benton) of Mt Juliett, Tennessee, and many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Visitation to pay final respects to the departed will be held on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M, with prayer services at 6:00 P.M at Sunset Funeral Home – 4631 Hondo Pass Dr. A homegoing will be held for Julia on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at 11:00 A.M at Sunset Funeral Home – 4631 Hondo Pass. Burial will follow at 12:30 P.M at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery – 4848 Alps Dr.
