Julian Winston Brown

January 16, 1946 - September 15, 2025

Lexington, Georgia - Julian Winston Brown, of Lexington, GA, passed away September 15, 2025, at the age of 79. He was born in Rocky Mount, NC, on January 16, 1946 to Mary Elizabeth Winston of Granville County, NC, and Herbert Julian Brown of Hertford County, NC. He grew up in Murfreesboro, NC, was a 1968 graduate of the Kenan-Flagler Business School from The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, with a BS in Business Administration. While at UNC, he played football and was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Brown moved to the Atlanta, GA, area in 1969 as a mortgage loan officer with Cameron Brown Company, a subsidiary of First Union National Bank. In 1986, he founded Traditional Mortgage Company in Tucker, GA, and served as its President until 1998, when he sold the business. Brown retired from the mortgage business at the age of 53. During his 30 year career as a mortgage banker, Brown was active in the Georgia Mortgage Bankers Association and Atlanta Mortgage Bankers Association, serving as President of both associations. Since retirement, he was active in real estate in Gwinnett, Walton and Oglethorpe counties, developing lots and building homes. Brown was licensed as a realtor in Georgia in 1970 and kept his license active until his death. He owned a farm in Oglethorpe County, GA, and spent much of his time there managing it for timber and wildlife. He moved and restored a 100 year old farmhouse on his farm and he and his wife Linda moved to the farm full time in 2019. He had a passion for playing poker with his friends and enjoyed woodworking and furniture making and was active until his death. Brown was predeceased by his parents and his first wife of 35 years, Nancy Dickens Brown. He is survived by his current wife Linda Jewett Brown; two children, son, Julian Winston (Winn) Brown, Jr. and wife Andrea of Lexington, GA, and daughter, Dr. Erin Brown Zawol and husband Chris of Oxford, GA; five grandchildren Alyssa Rae Brown and Julian Winston Brown, III, Memphis, Marie Thompson, Riley Jo Thompson, and Scarlett Ann Zawol; a brother William S. (Bill) Brown and wife Mary Lee of Henderson, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of life service will take place in the chapel of Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, East, on Saturday, October 11, 2025, starting at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service starting at 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations in Winston's name may be made to the following: Oglethorpe County EMS, 892 Athens Rd, Crawford, GA 30630; Hardigree Wildlife Sanctuary, 1110 Old Greensboro Rd., Watkinsville, GA 30677; outdoor education for the next generation, hunting and gun safety for youth.
