Kanta Kumar, a beloved homemaker, mother, grandmother, and cherished member of the community, passed away peacefully at her home in
Greenville, South Carolina, on December 4, 2025, at the age of 82. Born Kanta Gupta on June 15, 1943, along the waters of the Ganges River in Gesupur, India, she brought warmth and vibrancy to every space she occupied.
Kanta's journey took her from the serene foothills of the Himalayas in Dehradun, India, where she married her husband, Narendra Kumar, in 1960, to the land of opportunity in America. In 1968, she and her husband embarked on a brave new chapter, bringing their three children to join him in the United States. They first settled in the picturesque mountain valley of Brevard, North Carolina, before making their home in
Greenville, South Carolina, in 1975. Though Kanta embraced the American way of life, she always held her Indian heritage close to her heart.
A devoted mother to Sunita, Pyush, and Aruna, Kanta celebrated the treasures of family, joyfully welcoming the births of her four grandchildren, Krishna, Jasen, Arjun, and Arya. Her home was a beacon of love, laughter, and togetherness, where the richness of Indian cuisine met the warmth of family gatherings. Kanta was known for her culinary delights, her enthusiasm for board games and card games, and her knack for knitting. She found joy in engaging with her family and friends, sharing her passions for music and movies from both India and abroad.
Kanta was an active member of the Indian American and South Asian community, where her lively and giving spirit touched the lives of many. She dedicated herself to uplifting those around her, cherishing the connections she built and fostering a sense of belonging for all. Her vivacious and independent nature was infectious, inspiring others to forge bonds of friendship and support within the community.
Kanta is survived by her devoted husband, Narendra Kumar; her dear children, Sunita Kumar, Aruna Reeves (Todd) and Pyush Kumar (Seema); her four cherished grandchildren, Krishna Kumar, Jasen Reeves, Arjun Kumar, and Arya Kumar; and her brother, Dr. Vishnu Gupta.
The family will hold a visitation from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 10, 2025 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown where friends and relatives will gather to honor Kanta's remarkable life and the legacy of love she leaves behind. In this time of reflection, we will remember Kanta as a woman of immense strength, resilience, and grace-a beacon of love that brought together many lives, and whose spirit will forever remain woven into the hearts of those she touched.
