KAREN A. SPRENG (nee Frohlich), 72, of Westlake, was called home by God on Monday, 09 Mar 2026. Karen was born 04 July 1953 in Cleveland, OH to John and Nancy (nee Curtis) Frohlich.
Karen deeply cared for people and started volunteering in the hospital to assist with patient care during her teenage years. In 1974, Karen earned her R.N. from Lutheran Medical Center School of Nursing. She went on to earn her bachelor’s in psychology from Baldwin Wallace College in 1978. While she began her nursing career in surgery, she expanded her nursing practice to include a variety of different disciplines such as being a school nurse, parish nurse, working with clinical trial patients in the digestive disease institute, and patient/family education at the Cleveland Clinic. Most of her nursing career, however, focused on obstetrics. Besides bedside nursing, she taught group and private childbirth classes. When needed, she also wrote teaching curricula to support new class offerings. Such was her love of teaching and nursing that she became a certified childbirth educator through Lamaze International and later earned the designation of FACCE (Fellow of the Academy of Certified Childbirth Educators). She was a practicing R.N. for almost 51 years and in her career took care of thousands of patients.
In her spare time, she was an avid gardener and nurtured several gardens around her home. She enjoyed both cooking and baking as well as reading. Creative crafts such as quilting, sewing, and knitting were also favorite pastimes. She was active in her circle of friends and enjoyed attending bible studies.
Left to cherish Karen’s memory is her brother, John Frohlich; children Kathryn Peters (Mark) and Krista Spreng; and granddaughters Audrey, Charlotte, Elaine, and Greta. She is preceded in death by her parents John and Nancy.
