Karen Nell Allen, age 75, a devoted, public school educator and librarian who faithfully served the Mesquite Independent School District for 43 years, went home to be with the Lord on October 21, 2025. She was born August 17, 1950, in McKinney, Texas, to the late Charles Allen and Dorothy (McCollum) Allen.
Karen dedicated 33 years of her teaching career to instructing biology at North Mesquite High School. She found great joy in coaching the North Mesquite Academic Decathlon team, guiding her students not only to academic success but also to believe in their own potential. She spent her final 10 years in education as a librarian at Horn High School in Mesquite.
She was deeply loved and respected by her students, colleagues, and administrators alike. Her students admired her willingness to go above and beyond to help them succeed, often remarking on her genuine care for their learning and personal growth. Though she held high expectations in her classroom, her compassion and dedication made it clear that their success was her success. She believed that if a student failed, in some measure, she had failed as well, so she tirelessly worked to support every student willing to put forth the effort to learn.
As one fellow educator once noted, successful teachers must embody three key traits: care deeply about their students’ success, be organized, and know their subject matter well. Karen possessed each of these qualities in abundance. Her kindness, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to her students shone brightly throughout her long career. She was a blessing to her students, her peers, and the administrators with whom she worked.
Karen was also an avid reader who found great joy in literature and in sharing that love with others. She especially cherished the opportunities to travel to England as a sponsor for student groups, enriching their educational and cultural experiences.
As a devoted Christian, Karen loved the Lord with all her heart and loved to sing hymns of praise to the Lord. She also held a special love for her family—her three brothers, nieces, and nephews—who will remember her for her faith, grace, and the deep affection she shared with each of them. In addition, she was involved in an after-school program that taught students about Jesus.
Karen is survived by her brothers, Richard Allen and wife, Doris of Conroe, Algia Allen and wife, Linda of Fate, and David Allen and wife, Kim of Mesquite. Also, nephews Jason Allen, Lee, and wife Kena of Conroe, Chris and wife Raegan of Montgomery, Tyler and wife Lori of McKinney, and nieces Kendra Bullock and husband Jason of Magnolia, Texas, Glenna Russell and husband Matt of Rockwall, Kaitlin Ziemer and husband Jordan of Abilene. Great-nephews and great-nieces, Alden, Turner Allen of Conroe, Myles Allen of Montgomery, Brooke, Emma & Claire Bullock of Magnolia, Texas, Carly Russell of Rockwall, Caleb & Maddie Kate Ziemer of Abilene, Brooks & Wesley Allen of McKinney, and numerous cousins and other loving family members and friends.
