Karen Sue Appell, a dedicated registered nurse whose compassion and commitment to care marked her life’s journey, passed away on October 17, 2025, at the age of 72. Born on December 7, 1952, Karen pursued her passion for helping others through her education at IU Bloomington and IUPUI Schools of Nursing, where she laid the foundation for a lifelong career devoted to nurturing and healing.
Throughout her extensive career in nursing, Karen exemplified the qualities of empathy, diligence, and professionalism, earning the respect and admiration of her colleagues and the countless patients whose lives she touched. Her work was not just a profession to her; it was a calling that underscored her belief in the importance of healthcare and community well-being.
Karen is survived by her beloved mother, Grace Appell; her siblings, John Scott Appell, Deborah (Dave) Wills, and Amy (John) Stumler; her cherished nieces and nephews: Star Wills, Derek Stumler, Kaelin (Ricky) Prinsloo, and Ben Wills; her five great-nieces and great-nephews, along with one great-great-niece.
Karen is preceded in death by her father, John Francis Appell.
A Private Service will be held at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) and she will be laid to rest at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in New Albany.
