Karen Lynn Backofen, 77, of Salida, Colorado, passed away peacefully after a long illness at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Karen lived a life defined by kindness, generosity, and a deep love for her family and community. She married the love of her life, Robert Backofen, in April 1970, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support for those around them.
Karen worked as a bookkeeper for Sanders Oil Company and later fulfilled a lifelong passion by owning a bookstore in downtown Salida. A devoted reader, she found joy in sharing her love of books with others. She also spent many years working at Walmart, both in the cash office and in retail, where her warm spirit and friendly nature made her a beloved presence among coworkers and customers alike.
Above all, Karen was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a cherished "Granny." She touched countless lives with her compassion, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. Her kindness and generosity knew no bounds, and her legacy of love will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and the community she called home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to Ark Valley Humane Society; an ode to her love of animals and giving spirit.
Karen is survived by her loving husband, Robert, her daughter, Amy (Jacob) Chamberlain, granddaughters Abigail Albright, Jasmine Sanchez and "adopted" granddaughter, Mackinsey Blossom and a brother, Clinton (Eleanor) Sanders.
May she rest in peace, knowing she was loved beyond measure. On line condolences may be sent to the family at lewisandglenn.com. Arrangements are with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
