Karen Benson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 6, 2025.
Karen L. Benson entered a local rehab facility as a healthy active 80 year old. She was meant to go home after a brief stay. Instead, three months later she was dead due to multiple facility-acquired infections and lack of care (because she was low-income and the greedy for-profit "healthcare" system in America is an evil abomination).

She is survived by two loving daughters (Melanie and Melissa) who are forever traumatized and grief-stricken.

Our mom was not a perfect mom, but she was a good mom. She sacrificed and struggled most of her life to take the best care of us. Thanks to her we are both healthy, happy, successful adults.

Mom was a force of nature. Fiercely protective of her kids and determined to overcome any obstacle, with a wicked sense of humor. She loved ceramics, Bingo, Christmas, and hanging out with her crew under the gazebo. Most of all she loved her little rescue pup, Boo-da.

Originally from Pittsburgh, she moved to Deland in 1978 and enjoyed making it her home, while never losing her native "yinzer" accent. IYKYK.

Mom was an amazing cook and always offered food to everyone, whether they needed it or not. She was very generous and behind her strong, independent, resilient, and resourceful exterior personality - she had a soft compassionate heart.

We have never and will never know a stronger woman. There are no words to express our gratitude to our mom for raising us to also be strong women. Our dearest wish is that we continue to make her proud as we live honorable lives.

Shame on America for the way the elderly are treated. Especially the poor. May those responsible for my mother's deterioration and death receive the same level of care for themselves and their own loved ones one day. Amen.

Rest easy, mom. we love you and miss you dearly.
