1940 - 2024

Karen Sue Nash Culbertson, age 83, of Mattoon, IL passed away at 11:56 a.m. on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at the Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home.
No services are scheduled at this time. Schilling Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Karen was born on September 26, 1940 in Mattoon, IL the first of three daughters of Charles and Pauline Nash.
Survivors include her son, Steve (Ramona) Culbertson of Morton, IL; sister, Kay Nash Bell of Champaign, IL; grandsons, Jake Culbertson of Morton, IL, John and Matthew Baez of Palatine, IL, Brett Grant, Brandon Grant and granddaughter, Megan Lebeter. Karen also had nieces, nephews and 6 great-grandchildren.
Karen was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Mary Jeanne Nash; and her daughter, Susan Lynn Baez (Carl) Miller.
Karen was an avid reader and knitter. She was known for keeping in contact with friends and family. Formerly living in Morton, IL, Karen moved into her family home in Mattoon after retiring from her employment at the Peoria Children's Home. In Mattoon she reconnected with her childhood friends, MHS classmates of 1958 and cousins, lots and lots of cousins! She didn't smoke, drink or do the hootchie coo.
She was a mother first and foremost. She had a love for her children and grandchildren that was uncompromising. Even when they did things they shouldn't have, her love never wavered.
She also had a fantastic sense of humor, seeing the humor in life and not losing perspective of it. She had a knack for teaching her family right from wrong, not by yelling or screaming, but by caring and giving. She stayed strong in her faith.
