Karl Maxwell Obituary

Karl P. Maxwell, age 86 of Marcy, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2025, with his loving family by his side.

He was born on June 9, 1939 in Utica, a son of Raymond and Helen (Szurley) Maxwell. Karl attended Holland Patent Central School, graduating in 1956. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17, proudly serving from 1956 - 1958.

On October 6, 1962, he was united in marriage to Cindy Smith at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Holland Patent. Karl worked on his dairy farm for many years, also working with the NYS Department of Corrections and railroad. He was both the Supervisor and Assessor for the Town of Marcy for several years, as well.

From 1958 - 1962, Karl played for the semi-pro football team, the Frankfort Falcons and was a 2013 inductee of the Holland Patent Football Hall of Fame. Karl also enjoyed spending his time hunting, and above all else, watching his grandchildren play sports.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Cindy; children, Wayne (Harriett Ellinger) Maxwell, Albert "Ollie" (Joyce) Maxwell, of Gaithersburg, MD, Shelly (Andrew) Freiermuth, Kelly Maxwell, and Heidi (David) Smith; grandchildren, Karlene (Brandon), Allyson, Joelle, Michael (Sarah), Neil, Molly, and Jake; great grandchildren, Liam, Declan, Quinn, and Aiden; as well as nieces, nephews, and several cousins.

In addition to his parents, Karl was predeceased by his son, Andrew; a brother, Albert; and a sister, Mayone.

The family would like to thank the Stittville Fire Department as well as Mr. Tree, during this time.

Friends are invited to call on the family on Wednesday August 6, from 9 - 11 am, at Dimbleby Funeral Homes, Inc. 40 Main Street Whitesboro. A service for Karl will immediately follow the visitation. Burial will be in Townsend Cemetery.

I played semi-pro football with Karl on the Dolgeville Ramblers in 1959-60 team. Our coach was Bill Bynon, who also was Dolgevilles High coach. Karl and I also played high-school FB against Karl when I played at Canajoharie high-school from 1955 through 1958. He could run and hit as hard as anyone I ever played with or against. RIP old friend. Larry Horning, CHS 1954-58

I will miss him sitting on his front porch and waving every time I passed him while driving the farm truck. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Karl and I were born just months apart, and we were both named after our maternal grandfather Jan Karl Szurley. I will always remember Karl as the quiet, strong, best athlete in the family. We were all proud of Karl as he starred on his Holland Patent football team and his Frankfort Falcons semi-pro team.
Karl was a very good human being. He led a very good life, and was well liked and loved by his family and friends.
