Karl Edwin "Ed" Powers

1951 - 2023

Karl Edwin (Ed) Powers "Papaw" was lifted up peacefully to his heavenly home on Monday, March 27th, 2023. Ed passed away in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his family.
Ed was born in Roanoke, VA to Carl and Gladys Powers. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School, class of '69. Ed was married to his high school sweetheart, Cathy, in 1972. They were blessed with a full life of love and memories, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this past year. They started a family and had two wonderful children, Mandy and Matt. Ed was upgraded to "Papaw" in 2010 when Madison was born. She was the apple of his eye, and they shared a special love.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Gladys Powers; his sister, Donna Triplett; and father-in-law, Raymond Jones. Ed is survived by his loving wife, Cathy (Jones) Powers; his daughter, Mandy Arrington (Brian); his son, Matt Powers (Christie); his granddaughter, Madison Powers; his mother-in-law, Catherine Jones; brother-in-law, Ronnie St. Claire; his nieces, Karla Parker (James and family) and Melissa Churuka (family); extended family, Brenda Arrington, Debbie Washburn and David Terrell; and his aunt, Shelby Moore (Danny); along with numerous cousins and close friends.
Ed worked in the Electrical industry since the early 70's. In the 90's, he was offered an opportunity along with his childhood elementary friend, Gary Ayers, to purchase Commonwealth Lighting. They continued this partnership until his health declined last year. He met many people along the way, and many of those relationships grew into lifelong friendships.
Ed was an avid hunter and also loved the game of golf. He loved to travel with family and friends and was able to make so many memories that we will forever cherish. Ed loved life and that was evident to anyone who met him. He had a kind soul and the biggest heart. He was a true inspiration to all.
This is only a small glimpse into a man's life who lived life to the fullest each and every day. He will truly be missed.
