Karla Breed, age 88, formerly of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2025, at Mayflower Community in Grinnell, Iowa.
A funeral service will be held Monday, Dec. 29, 2025 starting at 10:30 A.M. at the First Methodist Church in Marshalltown. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation one hour prior to the service, also at the church. Karla will be laid to rest at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Mitchell Family Funeral Home has been entrusted with the care of Karla and her family. Memorials may be directed to the family. Karla was born March 6, 1937 in Charles City, Iowa. She was the daughter of John and Doris (Bucknell) Aird. Karla attended Charles City High School and graduated with the class of 1955. She continued her education at the Evangelical School of Nursing in Marshalltown, IA. and became a Registered Nurse.
On April 27, 1957 she married the love of her life Gerry Breed at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. Karla worked as a Registered Nurse for many years at the Marshalltown Area Community Hospital. She was the first school nurse for the LDF community schools. She held the position for 32 years and touched the lives of many students. Karla was an original member of the Le Grand Community Center Building Committee. Additionally, she was a longtime member of the First United Methodist church where she participated and served on many committees over the years. In her later years, she resided at Glenwood Place in Marshalltown for two years where she made many new friendships. In her free time, Karla enjoyed traveling, gardening, and sewing. In her later years, she enjoyed taking motorcycle rides, going on cruises, and bus trips. She also enjoyed collecting pig figurines and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
Karla is survived by her daughters: Kris (Phil) Does of Wayne, Nebraska, and Linda (Ron) Pexa, of Guernsey, Iowa; her seven grandchildren: Dan Whitmore, Anna (Travis) Vaughn, Dylan (Aubrey) Does, Ryan (Kim) Does, Abby (Jared) Callison, Beth (Ryan Stotts) Leaton, and David (Meredith) Leaton; 11 great-grandchildren:; one great-great-granddaughter; her brother Alan Aird of Charles City, IA.; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents: John and Doris; her husband Gerry; her brother Andy Aird; her mother and father in-law: Eddie and Jeanne Breed.
Karla’s family would like to thank Glenwood Place in Marshalltown and the Mayflower Health Care Center in Grinnell for the amazing, loving and compassionate care she received.
