Katherine Urban – age 92 of Hays, Kansas passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at the Wheat State Manor Nursing Home in Whitewater, Kansas.
She was born on June 11, 1931, in Plainville, Kansas to Michael and Dora (Fischer) Dechant. She married Daniel F. Urban on June 3, 1953, at Pfeifer, Kansas. He preceded her in death on February 27, 1994.
Katherine was a homemaker, was raised on a farm north of Plainville, Kansas and attended school in Plainville. After their marriage Katherine and Daniel moved to Great Bend, Kansas. Upon Daniel’s death in 1994, Katherine then moved to Hays. While living in Great Bend, she was a member of Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Altar Society.
She was a member of Saint Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, the Ladies Guild, the Sunflower Polka Club, and a Hays Bowling League. She enjoyed going to polka dances, watching KU basketball, cooking, baking, and playing cards.
Katherine is survived by her children, Gloria Michel and husband, Ed, Derby, KS; Steve Urban and wife, Nancy, Hays, KS; Janice Witt and husband, Bruce, Maize, KS; her grandchildren, Amanda Devlin (Tim); Nathan Michel; Rebecca Urban; Adam Urban; Nicole Hammerschmidt (Ryan); Sarah Witt; Madison Witt; her great grandchildren, Sam and Henry; Adley and Piper; with one on the way; her sister-in-law, Firma Dechant, Wichita, KS.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Dora Dechant; her husband, Daniel F. Urban; her brothers, Zaccheus Dechant; Pete Dechant; Henry Dechant; Richard Dechant; Paul Dechant; Ralph Dechant; her sister, Ann Arnhold; and her toddler sister, Mary Dechant.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at Saint Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, 2901 East 13th Street, Hays, Kansas, with graveside services at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, at Holy Cross Cemetery, Pfeifer, Kansas.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Monday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, and from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, at Saint Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church.
A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 P.M. Monday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays.
