Sunrise: July 11, 1940 – Sunset: February 26, 2026
Kathryn Kuris was born on July 11, 1940, in
Hammond, Indiana to George Kardulas and Despina Kardulas (née Kouvakas). She was the second of four children and is lovingly survived by her siblings Mary, John, and Elaine.
At the age of five, Kathryn, aka Kathy moved with her family to
Astoria, New York where she grew up surrounded by siblings, cousins, and extended family. It was there that she formed lifelong friendships and developed the vibrant personality that would define her life.
Early on, her young nephews, unable to pronounce "Aunt Kathy", gave her the nickname "Sassy." As it turns out, no name could have fit her better. "Sassy" perfectly captured her spirit, her style, and the unmistakable flair she carried throughout her life. Her creativity and pizzazz naturally led her to become a hairstylist and cosmetologist, a profession that suited her energy and artistry beautifully. Everyone in her chair felt special. Family and friends were frequent and lucky recipients of her talents. Her style was captivating, one week she was a strawberry blonde, the next a brunette with moon gold highlights, and she delighted in extending those bold choices to those she loved. Being styled by Kathy was not just about hair, it was about laughter, storytelling, and feeling beautiful.
It was during the summer of 1961, at a Greek-American festival at the Zappion Pavilion, while attending with her cousin Libby, that she met the man from Brooklyn, who would become her great love, George Kuris. They married in February of 1963 and shared 61 remarkable years together. Theirs was a marriage defined by true devotion, partnership, and sacrifice. They loved each other deeply and visibly, setting an extraordinary example not only for their children but for all who knew them. Through life's joys and challenges, they showed what commitment looks like, steady, faithful, and unwavering. Their marriage taught their children and those that were lucky enough to be close to them what love truly is: selfless, enduring, and rooted in faith.
Kathy was a devoted wife and a loving mother. She and George built their home on faith, loyalty, and unconditional love. She is survived by her three beloved children: her son John and his wife Sonia; her son Paul and his wife Nadia; and her daughter Desiree and her husband Sal. To her children, she was more than a mother, she was their greatest champion, their example, and their safe place. The love she and George shared became the blueprint for the lives their children would build.
Her devotion to growth and purpose did not stop with her first career. Later in life, Kathryn returned to school and became an educator. With her boundless energy, warmth, love, and positivity, she impacted the lives of countless students. She brought the same passion into the classroom that she brought into her home, making each child feel seen, encouraged, and capable. Teaching was not simply a job for her; it was an extension of her heart. Her creativity also found expression beyond hair and teaching. In her spare time, Kathy created one of a kind decorative Faberge eggs, ostrich, rhea, goose, duck, and more, Each egg was uniquely crafted and given as a gift. These extraordinary creations reflected not only the personality of the recipient but also how she felt about them. They were deeply personal expressions of love and imagination. Her family affectionately calls them "Kathy's Picassos",one-of-a-kind expressions of love that cannot be duplicated.
In later years, Kathryn cherished her visits to Florida, especially the joyful family outings to Coconuts, where she delighted in their world-renowned "Scoobee's." Those moments, gathered around a table, laughing with her children and family were among her happiest. For Kathy, it was always about being together.
Above all, Kathryn was proud and devoted to her Greek Orthodox faith. Her faith shaped her life, guided her marriage, and grounded her family. She believed in love, loyalty, hospitality, and strength - and she lived those values every day.
Kathryn was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend who poured her entire being into the people she loved. Her legacy lives on most powerfully in her children - in the way they love their spouses and their devotion to family, and honor the example she and George set. She showed them, and all of us, what real love looks like.
May her memory be eternal.
