Kathleen Ann Chaskey, age 70, of Onaway, died peacefully at home with her family at her bedside, on Saturday morning, November 8, 2025. Kathy was born on March 20, 1955, in Cheboygan to John "Jack" and Gertrude (Spencley) Taylor. Raised in Cheboygan, she graduated from Cheboygan High School in the class of 1973.
Kathy began her professional life at Community Memorial Hospital in Cheboygan, where she served as a licensed practical nurse. After her time at the hospital, Kathy transitioned into the field of chiropractic care. She took on the role of secretary and office manager at Holstrom's Chiropractic office in Cheboygan. Kathy found her niche in this environment and continued to work in similar positions throughout her career. She eventually retired from Olree Chiropractic in Onaway.
During her tenure at Holstrom's Chiropractic office, Kathy met Larry Chaskey, who was a patient at the time. Their connection quickly blossomed, leading to a wonderful relationship. On May 20, 1989, Kathy and Larry were united in marriage in Cheboygan and made their first home together in Kansas City, Kansas where Larry was stationed with the U.S. Army Reserve Center. Following Larry's retirement, they returned home to Michigan and made their home in Onaway.
Although Kathy worked outside the home for many years, her most cherished role was that of wife and mother. Her caring nature and selfless attitude made motherhood come effortlessly to her. Kathy was wholeheartedly dedicated to her children and grandchildren, always offering support in any way she could. She found immense happiness in attending their school events and sporting activities, proudly cheering them on at every opportunity. Kathy truly was the proudest grandmother, finding her greatest joy in being involved in her family's lives.
Kathy was filled with happiness upon hearing the news that she would soon become a great grandmother for the first time. The prospect of welcoming a new baby into the family brought her immense joy, and she eagerly looked forward to this special addition with great excitement.
Kathy enjoyed spending time outdoors where some of her favorite activities included tending to her beautiful flowers, soaking up the sun in a comfortable lounge chair, and leisurely floating in her pool. For excitement and entertainment, she enjoyed visiting the casino to play the slots and taking cruise ship vacations to tropical destinations. She enjoyed crafting and loved browsing booths of handmade items at craft shows. Kathy loved watching the birds that visited the feeder outside her window and was always delighted when a cardinal came to visit.
Kathy was known for her sweet, kind, and caring nature, always putting others before herself. She loved doting on Larry, her children, and especially her grandchildren, showering them with love and attention. Kathy's outgoing and bubbly personality made her fun to spend time with. Her strength and fortitude during her battle with cancer was truly remarkable.
She will be sadly missed by her husband of 36 years, Larry Chaskey, of Onaway; sons, Dennis (Nicole) Proctor of North Dakota and Todd Proctor (Jamie Ciarkowski) of Cheboygan; daughter, Heather (Jeremiah) Smith of Cheboygan; and the grandchildren she absolutely adored, Dylan Smith, Tyler (Hailey) Smith, Aubrey Smith, and Madison (Tyler) Schultz. Kathy also leaves her sisters, Kim Taylor (Jeff Lowery) of Bridgman and Penny (Clayton Jr.) McGovern of Midland; brother, Bob (Cindy) Taylor of Cheboygan; brother-in-law, Harry (Jean) Chaskey of Colorado Springs, Colorado; former daughter-in-law and good friend, Sarah Fay, of Cheboygan; and many nieces and nephews.
