Kathy Mugg Obituary

Published by Legacy on Aug. 31, 2025.
Kathy Dee Mugg, 71, of Lafayette, passed away on Friday, August 29, 2025 at Westminster Village in Lafayette.

She was born January 27, 1954, in Marion to the late Harold and Margaret (Magers) Mauk. She was a graduate of Oak Hill High School and continued her education at Indiana University earning her Master's of Education Degree from Indiana University. Kathy married Philip E. Mugg in 1977, he preceded her in death on April 27, 2024.

Kathy began her career as an Elementary School Teacher at her Alma Mater Oak Hill and then spent the majority of her teaching career in the West Lafayette Community School Corporation. She will be long remembered for her collaboration on projects such as the Blue Ribbon Award, various local grants, Math Bowl Coach and curriculum writing. She loved teaching about nature and looked forward to 5th Grade Camp and the Dunes Trip each year. She always said that school was about creating memories. That was evident through her long-lasting relationships with her students well into their adult years.

Along with her love of teaching, Kathy enjoyed attending IU Football and Basketball games. She enjoyed mushroom hunting, riding motorcycles, camping, and spending time with her beloved dog Chestnut. However, "GeGe's" greatest joy and love was being able to spend time with her sons and grandchildren, especially all of their trips to Disney World.
Another one of Kathy's joy was collecting Christmas villages. Every year she would turn her living room into a wonderland of magical enchantment. Each new season would bring purchases of more new villages. As her collection grew it became easier to leave the display up all year round, thus closing the living room off until it was Christmas time again.
Kathy will be missed tremendously by all who loved her. She will never be forgotten because of all the good times, that were shared with her. So long as they speak your name, your memory will never die.

The family would like to thank all of the staff from Comfort Keepers who helped take care of Kathy while she was in her home. This allowed her to stay in her home for as log as she could. Thank you to all the staff as Westminster who were a part of her care. We appreciate all the patience and love you showed to her. Thank you to hospice for your support when it was needed the most. Thank you to her friends who stopped by to see her and show her love and care.

Kathy is survived by her 2 sons, Dustin (Jennifer) Mugg and Jason Mugg; 4 grandchildren, Jocelyn, Lilia, Everett, and Nolan; a sister, Karen (Gary) Haupert; and several nieces and nephews.

Along with her husband, Philip, and her parents, Harold and Margaret Mauk, she was preceded in death by a sister. Pamela Wirkki.

Since Kathy had a love for animals and nature, those wishing may donate to the animal shelter of your choice or to the Indiana Dunes Tourism Indigenous Cultural Trail Non-Endowment Fund https://share.google/Tbs1HwoYqYpLP2qF0
