MARCH 26, 2026

On March 26, 2026, Kay Ruth Carroll Binford passed away peacefully at the family farm in Morganfield, Kentucky, surrounded by her loving family. Born November 17, 1931, in Skullbone, Tennessee, to William Claude Carroll and Ruby Hampton, Kay grew up as the daughter of a sharecropper. From her earliest years, she developed a deep love and respect for the land and all of its bounties.

Kay's story is one of true love at first sight. Her late husband knew instantly she was the one; they met in high school, dated, married, and raised two sons together.

Their lives together took them from Memphis to Georgia, Texas, and finally Maryland, where Bill finished his service. After returning to civilian life, they moved to Charlotte, NC; spent time in Huntsville, Alabama; then, after a career move, lived in France for several years. They eventually settled in Anderson, South Carolina, enjoying life on Lake Hartwell.

Kay discovered her love of bowling during her time in Charlotte. Later, this passion led to recognition and induction into both the South Carolina and Alabama Bowling Halls of Fame.

Kay remained active throughout her life, enjoying both water and snow skiing. She drove the boat and judged local water skiing competitions-a sport she encouraged her sons to love. Determined and adventurous, Kay earned her pilot's license, which she and Billy enjoyed together. Traveling was a passion for Kay and Bill. Sometimes they flew privately in their small plane, other times they traveled commercially. Together they visited all 50 states and seven continents. On many journeys, their children and grandchildren joined in, sharing the fun and making family memories.

Kay loved being a homemaker and caring for her family. To share that joy, she volunteered for Meals on Wheels. After Mr. Binford's diagnosis, she helped the local Alzheimer's Association and volunteered with Hospice of Simpsonville.

Kay took pride in everything she did. As Billy's devoted wife, she poured her heart into their marriage. To her sons, she was a loving mother, and as a grandmother and great-grandmother, she always showed care in every role.

Kay is preceded in death by her husband, William G. Binford; her parents, William and Ruby Carroll; her sisters, Paula, Brenda, and Mable; her grandson, Brian Binford; and her daughter-in-law, Kitty Binford. She is survived by her sons, Bill Binford and Steve Binford; grandsons, Will Binford and Jonathan Binford; granddaughter, Jackie Stephenson (Tony); and great-grandchildren, JT and Aubree.

The family extends its deepest gratitude to Home Instead of Henderson, especially Amanda.

The family also wishes to thank Sam McCloud and Cyndi Byrd for providing equipment that made Kay comfortable during her final days. Finally, they are grateful to Summit Place of Anderson for caring for Kay before her time in Kentucky.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to Alzheimer's Association, Meals on Wheels, or volunteer your time to your local senior centers, or any organization devoted to helping senior citizens with their needs. Arrangements will be at McDougald Funeral Home in Anderson, SC.
