She lived in University City through high school and then later attended Washington University, where she became a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority and met her husband, Ernie. They married on April 12, 1955, and later moved to Washington in 1961. Kay was busy with school activities, the Presbyterian church, Girl Scouts and P.E.O. chapters, as well as volunteering for many civic organizations.

Kay and Ernie loved spending winters in Vero Beach, Florida, and summers on Green Lake, Spicer, Minnesota. They both had fond memories of visiting family and friends. Kay will be remembered for her love of family, friends, needlepointing, reading, and travel.

Survivors include her daughter, Cynthia H. Gilbertson (Michael), Faribault, Minnesota; her son, Douglas Hazel (Elizabeth), Washington; grandsons, MD Gilbertson (Nadine Seivert), Andrew (Emily) Gilbertson, Alex Hazel (Jen Cecil), Kit (Julie) Hazel; six great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Ernest Hazel III; her parents, Fred R. and Kathleen Lucy Hammond; and her in-laws, Ernest Hazel Jr. and Norma Hazel.

The family would like to thank the caregivers for their exceptional care and support.

A private service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Presbyterian Church of Washington (4834 South Point Rd. Washington, MO 63090) and P.E.O. Foundation, (P.E.O. Executive Office, 3700 Grand Ave. Des Moines, IA 50312).
