Keith Gene Liefer, Ski Industry Leader, Dies at 72
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Keith Liefer. He shocked us all with his unexpected passing on April 9th in Temecula, CA, only a few miles from his childhood home where he grew up on the family ranch.
Keith is survived by his wife of over 40 years Janet Galdonik Liefer, brother Wayne Liefer, son Joe Liefer, daughter Katie Liefer, son-in-law Matt Bievenour, daughter-in-law Veronica Liefer, his two cherished grandchildren Charles Jack Liefer II & Eva Lynn Liefer, and lastly his best, furry friend & loyal companion, Annie Rocket. Not to mention countless friends & colleagues.
He was preceded in death by his mother Nathaline Nicolas Liefer and father Charles Jack Liefer.
Keith was born in Temecula, CA, where he grew up on a turkey ranch with his older brother Wayne. He graduated from Elsinore High School at age 16 and then attended San Diego State University. In 1975 he relocated from Temecula, CA to Steamboat Springs, CO to kickstart his ski industry career, securing a position at SportStalker. Within a year, he received an invitation to relocate to Snowbird, UT, to which he enthusiastically accepted, though he humorously admitted "where is Snowbird?" There, he and his wife Janet, along with other individuals who would later become significant friends and business partners, managed the store. In 1983, Keith returned to Steamboat to oversee operations in the region. He was promoted to Chief Operating Officer and Partner of Christy Sports in 1995, when SportStalker merged with Christy Sports.
Throughout his career, Keith remained a true entrepreneur at heart, constantly seeking out new ideas and innovative solutions to solve problems. Recognizing the ongoing issue of uncomfortable ski boots, he took the initiative to establish Dynamic Foot Positioning, a company dedicated to improving ski and snowboard boots and everyday footwear. At the dawn of the Snowboard industry, he supported, encouraged, and was an integral part of the team that formed what today is known as Powder Tools, one of the first snowboard specific shops in North America. These ventures were always done alongside his true friends who undoubtedly will continue to carry out his legacy. Keith hired and helped shape many of today's ski industry leaders that now work throughout every facet of the Ski and Snowboard industry across the country. He retired in 2017, but stayed on as a trusted advisor until recently. Reflecting on his career, he remarked "my greatest work accomplishment is in the people" he said shortly after his retirement.
Keith was an accomplished athlete in high school, competing in sports in every season: baseball, basketball, and football. Those evolved later into a love of skiing, snowboarding, golf, and coaching youth sports. His greatest passion however, was enjoying the magic of the outdoors and the peace of finding himself deep in the wilderness. The Rocky Mountains captivated his imagination as a young child, and he lived every day until his last loving, exploring, and appreciating the lands around him. His most joyous moments included, fishing in the wind river range, archery hunting elk with his son in the fall, or working on the endless project list at his off-grid cabin. The Cabin was his own little piece of heaven on earth in North Routt County. He built a masterpiece, a sanctuary for himself and his family, and always welcomed any friends with open arms to share in the enjoyment of his sanctuary.
Keith was a force of positivity, generosity and kindness and will be deeply missed by all of us who had the pleasure of knowing him. He will forever be cherished, his absence felt daily, and those who had the privilege of knowing him will aspire to live as he did. A Celebration of Keith's life will be held at the Strings Music Pavilion on June 1, 2024 at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers the family is asking to donate to The Keith Liefer Legacy Fund. https://yvcf.org/funds/keithliefer/

Keith was a great partner on the golf course and the the hiking trail---a kind and generous good man---our trips to Pinehurst were particularly special.

Met Keith trying out for the Brandywine summer softball team, 1975. Along with JT and my self, we were the outsiders trying to make the team. Coach Frank Genetti eyed us suspiciously until they saw Keith and JT perform. No brainier, they made the team and so did I on their tailwinds. Went on to ski, snowboard and golf throughout the years. Hell of an athlete, but even a better man. RIP my friend.

Keith was so friendly and a positive person!!! We met him with our kids ski raced. He sold my husband his first ski boots when Keith worked in Snowbird, Utah! He and my husband loved their vintage toyota land cruisers and would swap stories about them. So many wonderful memories!!! We will miss him!!!
