Keith Reid

One of my favorite groups going back 55 years. Keith wrote great music, a great, great talent. Probably my favorite song is "Wreck Of The Hesperus" which was on Procol's 3rd, A Salty Dog. The last couple years have been difficult losing Gary and now Keith Reid. But both Keith and Gary are in heaven right now, composing music, making music. I think of their albums a lot and always will. RIP, Mr. Reid

Procol Harum are known for Gary Brooker's superb piano playing and Keith Reid's scholarly, evocative lyrics. (Other musicians in the band also certainly cut the mustard too, let us not forget!)

Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin referred to A Salty Dog as a "masterpiece". My first real introduction to Procol was in 1973, when I was 16. The Grand Hotel album is an undervalued magnum opus.
A Whiter Shade of Pale was only the tip of the iceberg, great though it is, preceding a series of superb albums. (it is interesting to note that Grand Hotel appeared in the same month as Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon- in my book Grand Hotel became, though a masterwork, slightly overshadowed by that in terms of chart success).

When I first heard Keith Reid's lyrics I felt I had discovered something very special indeed.
Live at Edmonton achieves something few bands could achieve-a natural meld of classy rock music with a classical orchestra. Few other bands could pull that mix off without sounding pretentious-but Procol did just that.
Please listen to Toujours L'Amour, from Grand Hotel, with it's world weary lyric and yet a driving riff.
Keith could tell a story and make you ponder in one song.
I offer my condolences to his family, and a huge thank you for Keith's contribution to rock music.

“Rest in Peace Keith Reid” I was so sad to see this news. Such a great man with an innate ability to write stunning lyrics. You will be missed by so many. My heart goes out to your family.

My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Keith Reid. I've been a fan of Procol Harum for over 50 years and his lyrics as the poet in residence still shine for me.

Condolences to Keith's loved ones. Procol Harum, byword for deep in a profound era of popular music, Keith added his intense, romantic imagery in fine literary form to the moving subtle airs. A Whiter Shade of Pale simultaneously exalts us, and evokes yearning for ungraspable ideals. A song for the ages. Thankyou.

One of my favorites was Procol Harum live with Edmonton Symphony doing Conquistador, written by Keith. Rest in peace.
