Kelly Jean Rae May, 57 of Lanexa, Virginia, passed away unexpectedly early morning of January 17, 2024. Kelly was a loving and caring wife, mother, Mimi to her two grandchildren, devoted friend to many and dedicated healthcare professional. Everyone who met her knew immediately how special and caring a person she was and Kelly would help anyone in need. She especially cared for many children and thought of them as her own.
Kelly was born in Newport News, Virginia on July 31, 1966, and was raised and lived in Lanexa, Virginia for most of her life. She attended New Kent County Schools and graduated from New Kent High School in 1984. Post graduation, Kelly furthered her education and graduated from Southside Regional Medical Center's School of Radiation Science. She also completed courses in her field of study at Virginia Commonwealth University. Kelly worked as a registered CT/X-Ray Technologist at Southside Emergency Care and worked for 25 years of service at Johnston Willis Hospital diligently working nights and weekends throughout her career. She was an active member of the International Service Sorority Beta Sigma Phi for four years in which she enjoyed participating in the many community service oriented programs and regaled with her sorority sisters at various social events.
Kelly married her husband Rick May on October 1, 1994, in Lanexa at Liberty Baptist Church. They were overjoyed to begin their family and welcome three children, sons Alec and Cameron and daughter Bailey. Equally as thrilling to Kelly was becoming Mimi to her grandchildren Thane and Ashton (Alec and Keeley). She absolutely loved being with her grandbabies and spoke of them often to her friends and family.
Kelly was preceded in death by her father Floyd Rae, mother Francis Traylor Rae, brother Gary Rae, sister-in-law Amy Baker May, and cousin Anita Norton. She is survived by her devoted husband Rick, their children Alec (Keeley) May, Cameron May, Bailey May and grandchildren Thane and Ashton May, sisters Cheryl (Stephen) Caldwell, Deborah Rae, brother Scott (Tracey) Rae, and sister-in-law Loretta Leonard. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, loving in-laws, and several special friends.
A gathering of friends and family, to celebrate Kelly's life, will be held February 9, 2024 from 5 – 7 PM at Vincent's Funeral Home in Providence Forge, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and/or pledge to become an organ donor.
