Kenneth Wayne Aitchison

1942 - 2024

Kenneth W. Aitchison, a man of unwavering integrity and compassion, passed away peacefully on December 10 with his beloved bride, Carole, "the best thing that ever happened to him," and his devoted children by his side. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Ken carried his Canadian roots proudly throughout his life, cultivating a legacy of kindness, humility, and purpose.

Ken dedicated his career to transforming the lives of individuals with disabilities. His journey began in North Dakota, where he served as Administrator of the Medical Center Rehabilitation Hospital (MCRH). There, he pioneered one of the first successful rural statewide rehabilitation models, ensuring care for patients across even the most remote corners of the state. His visionary leadership continued as President and CEO of Kessler Rehabilitation Corporation in New Jersey, where he built a nationally renowned rehabilitation system, providing access to exceptional care and setting new standards of excellence in the field.

Ken earned his undergraduate degree from the University of North Dakota (UND), where he also received a master's in business administration. He later achieved a second master's in public health from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. These accomplishments laid the foundation for his lifelong dedication to the field of rehabilitation and public service.

Beyond his professional achievements, Ken was a man of deep personal integrity who believed in living with honesty and self-reliance. He often reflected on life's lessons, encouraging those around him, especially his grandchildren, to "pursue what you want but appreciate what you have" and to recognize that "there are many ways to achieve happiness." He lived by these principles, creating a meaningful life of service, love, and adventure.

Ken's greatest joy was traveling through life with Carole, his wife of 58 years. Together, they shared countless adventures, explored the world, and built a life centered on family, love, and laughter. His dedication to his family extended to his children and grandchildren, with whom he loved to share time, games, and wisdom.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carole Aitchison; his children, Kent Aitchison (Victoria) and Kristen Wheeden (Michael); his cherished grandchildren, David Aitchison (26), Cameron Wheeden (24), Zachary Wheeden (22), Matthew Aitchison (20), and Brady Wheeden (19); and his siblings, Diane Allum and Larry Aitchison, both of Brandon, Manitoba, Canada. Ken's deep love for his family and his pride in their accomplishments were constant sources of joy in his life.

Ken's philosophy in life can be summed up in his own words, as written for his grandchildren: "Be true to yourself. Keep a good moral compass-even when those around you behave differently. Take the high road; in the end, it will give you the greatest satisfaction."

Ken's legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched-both personally and professionally. His integrity, vision, and compassion will remain an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was just a really great guy.

Ken's family requests that memorials be made in his memory to the University of North Dakota Alumni Association and Foundation's Angel Fund, which helps students overcome barriers to their success that result from unanticipated financial hardships.
