Kenneth George Bautel, affectionately known as "Ken," passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026, in Macomb Township, Michigan, just weeks shy of his 90th birthday. Born on February 10, 1936, in
Madison Heights, Michigan, Ken lived a life filled with love, dedication, and unwavering devotion for those he loved most.
Ken's legacy is defined not only by his remarkable 25-year career with the City of Ferndale's Department of Public Works but, more importantly, by the profound commitment he had as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed 54 years of marriage to his beloved wife, Susan Ann Bautel, who remains in the hearts of their family as a steadfast partner and beloved matriarch. Ken was immensely proud of his children: Julie (Evan) Biafore, Jon-Paul Bautel, and Nicole (Alan) Dostie. His unwavering support extended to attending bowling tournaments, soccer games, and dance recitals-moments that filled their lives with joy and cherished memories.
Nothing brought Ken greater happiness than sharing his love of trains and cars with his grandson, Sawyer Dostie, and engaging in horseback riding with his granddaughters, Sinclaire and Scarlett Dostie. These joyful interactions created lasting bonds, enriching the lives of both Ken and his grandchildren as they take over the "reins" of his beloved horse, Traveller.
Ken's life was not defined by his work alone; he was a man brimming with interests and hobbies. An avid reader, he found pleasure in stories of American military history, particularly those authored by Stephen Ambrose. His appreciation for good literature was matched by his fondness for classic westerns and intricate mysteries, featuring the iconic actor, John Wayne, or the equally iconic character, Sherlock Holmes. A competitive soul at heart, he enjoyed friendly games of poker, euchre, or rummy, often challenging family and friends with his strategic mind.
Educated at St. James and later graduating summa cum laude from the University of Detroit while raising a family and working full time, Ken exemplified the value of hard work and perseverance. He was a member of the Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity, participating in student council, demonstrating his thirst for knowledge and his encouragement for others to unravel the reasons behind every answer.
Ken also proudly served in the U.S. Army SP4 3rd Armored Division from 1959 to 1961, stationed in Germany and subsequently in the Army Reserve until 1965. His military service not only shaped him personally but instilled a deep sense of pride that carried through his life. He often reminisced about his European travels during this time, sharing stories from his experiences with a twinkle in his eye.
A quiet and reserved man at heart, Ken possessed a profound spirit of resilience, often muscling through injury and never complaining when unwell. His protective nature enveloped those he loved, sacrificing for their happiness without ever seeking anything in return. Ken's meticulously manicured lawn each summer and crystal-clear driveway each winter stood as testaments to his dedication and pride in his home.
His German and French heritage was also a source of pride, manifesting in the occasional phrases that would roll off his tongue, especially when emphasizing a point. Those sweet moments of nostalgia resonate within his family, who remember his insatiable sweet tooth, particularly for dark chocolate and coconut.
Ken will be dearly missed by his loving family and friends who survive him: his children, Julie, Jon-Paul, and Nicole, along with his grandchildren, Sawyer, Sinclaire, and Scarlett. Together, they carry forward his legacy of kindness, dedication, and love-a testament to the remarkable man he always was.
A celebration of Ken's life will take place on February 9, 2026, at St. Mary Catholic Church 730 S Lafayette Ave, Royal Oak, Michigan 48067 starting at 10:00 a.m. with the instate starting at 9:00 a.m. Friends and family are invited to gather to honor the memory of a truly extraordinary man whose legacy will forever be cherished.
