Kenneth Ray Burgess, age 64, of Onaway, died at home on Friday, September 26, 2025. The son of Jack and Ethel (Pierce) Burgess, Ken was born in Onaway on December 31, 1960. He married Annette Boughner on May 21, 1978, at the RLDS Church in Onaway.
Ken was known for his strong work ethic and dedication throughout his professional life. He spent many years in the construction industry, where he worked setting modular homes and was responsible for installing the siding on these homes. After a long tenure in construction, Ken transitioned into the field of mechanics to work alongside his son, Kenny, in his auto repair business.
A lifelong resident of Northern Michigan, Ken was known for his deep connection to nature and the great outdoors. His adventurous spirit led him to continually seek new experiences in the wilderness. Ken was passionate about backpacking and often hiked the High Country Trail, which he fondly referred to as the Blue Dot Trail. No matter the time of year, he found joy in exploring the trails of Northern Michigan, often accompanied by his family and closest friends. Many of these excursions included tent camping along the way and on occasion, Ken would forgo his tent, choosing instead to sleep under the stars.
Ken's love for adventure wasn't limited to backpacking. He found just as much enjoyment in kayaking and snowmobiling. Floating down the river, Ken fully immersed himself in the tranquil beauty of his surroundings. And like his hiking adventures, he sometimes embarked on overnight kayaking journeys and paddling during the winter months. His snowmobiling excursions were true safaris, taking him and his companions to remote areas. Whether navigating winding rivers or traversing snowy trails, Ken always made an adventure out of every trip.
Ken's love for the natural beauty of Northern Michigan was a defining part of his life. Each spring, he eagerly anticipated the arrival of morel mushroom season, venturing into the woods to hunt morels in all his favorite places and occasionally, he would take the opportunity to relax with a bit of fishing. A voracious reader, Ken usually read science fiction novels that captured his imagination and curiosity.
Above all, Ken found immense joy in spending time with his grandchildren. He shared a special bond with each of them, which was evident in the activities they enjoyed together. As an avid computer gamer, Ken often played games both with and against his grandkids. He went so far as to set up the living room specifically for group gaming sessions, ensuring everyone could join in the fun. And when they could not all be in one place, they played games with each other online. Ken also loved 4-wheeling and trail riding with his grandchildren, turning every outing into a memorable adventure. They would ride and camp out in the woods, waking up each morning to breakfast over a campfire and then hit the trails again. In everything Ken did, he created wonderful memories and adventures for those he loved most.
Truly a family man, Ken cherished spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, brothers, nieces, and nephews. He cultivated close relationships with each member of his family and took great joy in sharing life's adventures and the great outdoors with them. His legacy is reflected in the memories created and the bonds strengthened through the time he devoted to those he loved most.
Ken was known for his quiet demeanor and laid-back nature, always greeting others with a smile that seemed perfectly suited to every occasion. His approachable presence made him a good neighbor, always ready to offer a helping hand whenever it was needed. Ken's kindness and willingness to support those around him left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Although he will be deeply missed, the wonderful memories he made with his loved ones will continue to be cherished. The moments spent together and the joy he brought to family and friends will be fondly remembered for years to come.
Ken leaves his wife of forty-seven years, Annette Burgess, of Onaway; daughter, Cammie Burgess (Robert Pope) of Onaway; son, Kenny (Tanya) Burgess of Grayling; five grandchildren, Jacob, Jazmin, Chloe, Andrew, and Levi; as well as his brother, John (Carol) Burgess of Lansing; nieces and nephews; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jack; mother, Ethel Haney; stepfather, Bob Campbell; and two brothers, Larry and Craig.
Ken's family will receive friends at the Onaway 7th Day Adventist Church on Thursday, October 2, 2025, from 12 noon until Ken's memorial service begins at 1:00 PM. Elder David Glenn will officiate. For those who wish to offer their condolences, the family kindly requests that contributions be made to assist with Ken's final expenses. Your support during this difficult time is deeply appreciated.
