Kenneth Mulvey Obituary

Published by Guilford Funeral Home from Jul. 22 to Jul. 23, 2011.
Kenneth J. Mulvey Jr. passed away on Thursday, July 21, at the Connecticut Hospice after a brave battle with melanoma. He was born on November 19, 1950 in New Haven, son of the late Kenneth J. Mulvey Sr. and Elizabeth (Cassidy) Mulvey. He was the beloved husband of Nancy (O'Keefe) Mulvey and the devoted father of Gregory K. Mulvey of Farmington, Timothy P. Mulvey of Guilford and Tara C. Mulvey of Washington D.C. Ken attended St. Aedan's school, Hopkins Grammar School, and graduated cum laude from Boston College School of Business in 1972. He received his JD from Fordham University School of Law in 1975, where he served on the Urban Law Journal staff. Ken began the practice of law in December 1975 with the office of Flanagan and Flanagan. He spent his entire career in the same firm, eventually rising to be senior partner in Mulvey, Oliver, Gould and Crotta. Ken was a member of the New Haven Bar Association and the Connecticut Bar Association. Past president of the New Haven Jaycees, Ken was one of the organizers of the first state games for Special Olympics. During many seasons coaching basketball, baseball, and lacrosse he taught Guilford youth the value of sportsmanship and love for the game. Among his many assumed responsibilities in youth sports Ken was the president of the Guilford Youth Basketball League, Commissioner of Guilford Little League Baseball, and president of the Netminders, a parent lacrosse booster group. He also was a member of the Standing Fields Committee and served on the Guilford Parks and Recreation Commission for twelve years, eight of those as Chairperson. An avid Boston sports fan, particularly the Red Sox and Boston College Eagles, he was happiest cheering on his teams with family and friends. He was a wonderful husband, father, friend and colleague and will be missed by all who had the pleasure to know him. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. George Church, 33 Whitfield Street, Guilford on Tuesday, July 26, at 11:30 AM. Burial will follow the Mass at St. George Cemetery, Hubbard Road, Guilford. Friends may call on Monday, July 25 from 4 to 8 PM at the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church Street, Guilford. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Our Lady of Sorrows School, c/o Father Bryan Timby, 3700 Thomas Street, Memphis, TN 38127. Words cannot express how much the passing of Ken has left a void in all of our lives. He was one of the most prolific defense attorneys whom I was proud to have known and been associated with.

My deepest sympathy to his family.

I only wish that I had been apprised of his untimely passing sooner.

May he rest in peace.

Nancy,

I just learned of Ken's recent passing and am so sorry for you & your kids to experience the loss. It doesn't seem fair that you lost your Mom & husband within a few months of each other. My recollection of Ken from Brewster days was that he was always a very nice man. I hope the wonderful memories carry you through the tough times ahead. My 10 year old is going to his first BC football game this weekend. We will think of you & Ken.

Nancy, Tara, Greg, and Tim: It's always hard to lose a loved one who is dear to you, it's the memories that get you through the hard times. From the days of youth soccer I shared with Tim to High School soccer and basketball, Ken Mulvey was a clear family guy. I can only imagine the love he had for his wife and children, it was clear to see as an outsider and I am blessed to have known him and his family.

Ken was a great trial lawyer and good person. I had many cases with him over the years and got to see his work first hand. Sometimes that included winning a motion or a case at my expense, but at least I knew he beat me fair and square. He also did me some favors over the years for which I was always grateful. He will be missed and a lawyer and a friend.

My deepest sympathies to the Mulvey family. I worked with Ken on a few cases over the years, and also would see him around town. As an attorney, he was top notch. Pleasant to deal with, and obviously very skilled. As a person, he was very kind, and always had something nice to say. He was a great guy, and someone who I thought very highly of. I was shocked to hear of his passing. He was way to young. My condolences to the family.

We are so sorry for your loss. First met Ken as we worked on the first Special Olympics State Games in 1980. Those were at Southern and Ken and the Jaycees were instrumental in making those games happen. We always admired his work and enjoyed watching him as he became active here in Guilford. He was a good and generous man with a great personality. God bless you with comforting memories during this sad time and God bless Ken.

My big brother Ken: I followed you through St. Aedan's, Hopkins, Boston College, the law profession, Westville AC softball and the Jaycees. Your leadership, friendship, kindness and wisdom was evident from 1957 when I moved to Westville and you, Mark Lyons and Carl Nelson welcomed our family to the neighborhood and all through our acdemic and athletic pursuits over the years. You were always organizing baseball, football, softball, tennis, paddleball and local olympics in the neigborhood with the many children that grew up in the McKinley and Alston Avenue areas. The Lyons, Moffit, Smith, Kent, Nelson, Kearney, Murray and other families filled 0ut your rosters and made the sixties really special for all of us playing on on the Yale fields, The Edgewood Club or in the street. We were blessed to have you around and we will retain all those great memories. You will be dearly missed by all your many friends. Your family, friends and the community have lost a very special person.

Ken and I grew up together in New Haven. He was one of my closest friends. We shared a mutual passion for sports and competed in every imaginable sport. We gave each other advice on what law school to attend and studied for the bar together, talking about evidentiary for hours. We waited for the bar results and he was just as happy that I had passed the bar as he was himself passing the bar. Ken and I are of different faiths and he introduced me to my first Christmas Tree. I know that Ken was a great lawyer and by all accounts equally adept as a husband and as a father. He will be missed.

Ken was among the finest of trial lawyers: brilliant, hardworking, fearless, honest, imaginative and ethical. His untimely death is a terrible loss to his family, his clients, his community, the legal profession and to all who had the privilege of knowing him. We'll miss his dry sense of humor and shy smile, his consistently good judgment and his unfailing sense of justice coupled with a tenacious willingness to work toward that end. We were blessed to be among his friends.

To Ken's Family: I've been practicing law for about 8 years longer than Ken and have known him for most of the time our practices have overlapped. Whenever we were on the opposite side of a case I knew I could count on Ken to be a straight shooter and a man of his word; there are many defense attorneys you cannot say that about. Ken and I also shared growing up in Westville and often talked about that. Ken was a decent, fair, caring, and gentle person and I and my colleagues will miss him dearly. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Steve Floman
