KENNETH LEE. DUNNUM, Major, USMC Retired He was born in Aurora, Colorado on March 21, 1953. He grew up in a large military family. He was a graduate of Bemidji State University. Upon His Commissioning in the United States Marine Corp, Major Dunnum was stationed at several bases throughout his 20 year military career (Quantico, Virginia, 29 Palms MCAGCC, California, Okinawa, Japan, Fort Eustis, Virginia, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, FMFLANT-Norfolk, Virginia, HQMC, Arlington, Virginia. There was not an assignment Major Dunnum didn't look forward to. His ability to participate in Desert Storm is what he cherished most. Major Dunnum's service to the community did not stop with the Marine Corp. For several years he has been active in Lord of Life Lutheran Church, with projects involving youth, finishing the church basement, etc. He was also instrumental in renovating community centers and NOVACO and FACETS projects. These are projects his whole family enjoyed working on together. Ken's hobbies are where his creativity really shined. Wood working, building waterfalls, gardening, running, rock climbing and biking helped to keep Ken fit. Watching his boys participate in their respective sports brought him great pride and joy. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Jayne Ellen Westerman, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; sons, Andrew (27) and Matthew (23). The Dunnum family has called Fairfax, Virginia home for 15 years. He is also survived by his parents Kenneth E. and Mary E. Dunnum; his siblings, Gwenn Stepanski, Russell Dunnum, Delores Zamora, Christopher Dunnum, Timothy Dunnum, Thomas Dunnum and Mary Carter; his father-in-law Karl Westerman; brother-in-law, Douglas Westerman. The family will receive friends at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, Virginia on Friday, February 20, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, February 21, 2009 at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 5114 Twinbrook Road, Fairfax, Virginia 22032 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., with a funeral service beginning at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Lord of Life Church, memo line to read "Youth Group"; or to the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, 3800 Fettler Place #104, Dumfries, VA 22055.
