I was a relatively young buck who had recently been promoted to a supervisory position in ARAMCO, Saudi Arabia, when the company closed offices in Holland and distributed those employees into various divisions in Kingdom. Ken landed in mine.
In no time I could see he was a bit different - a jolly fellow who smoked a pipe and if his beard would have been fully gray, he could have passed for Santa Claus. He was that jolly! It didn't take me long to see that he was quite a unique thinker. Ken was into a lot of esoteric subjects.
When a number of us had early, mediocre IBM PC clones, Ken had the first color MacIntosh computer in our ARAMCO community. He mastered it and dazzled us all with what he could make it do.
Being young, I tried to tackle every challenge on the horizon and was tilting at windmills until one day Ken came into my office and asked if he could shut the door.
After a few minutes of small talk, Ken politely said "I see you working hard and expending a lot of energy fighting all sorts of battles and issues. It has been my observation that a lot of your energy is focused on things that you really have little to no control over. I don't mean to meddle where I shouldn't, but I'd like to ask if you would consider something. What would your life and future achievements look like if you only focused your efforts and energy on those things you can honestly change?"
He leaned back in his chair and took a big puff on his pipe. As he could see by the look on my face, I was honestly considering his recommendation, he dawned that characteristic signature grin that was Ken's alone and said "Yeah!"
I would recall that encounter with Ken many times in my life when I found myself tilting at windmills. I have even made the same suggestion to several of my children and other coworkers over the years. Funny how a brief encounter with someone can result in a lasting, positive alteration in the life of another!
God bless you, Ken

I met Ken through the CSML Gun Club. What a knowledgeable gentleman he always was. His love for his family was always present and he was patient when teaching new shooters. I will truly miss this man for all seasons.
