WEAVERVILLE – Kermit Ray Shelton, age 79, of Weaverville was welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven on Thursday, July 31, 2025. He was the son of the late J.D. and Valeria Payne Shelton and was also preceded in death by his in-laws, Glen, Sr. and Alice Wright Rice.
Mr. Shelton was born on March 20, 1946, in Buncombe County and lived at the family homeplace his entire life. He worked at Feed - Seed Supply for 47 years as the general manager. Kermit was a faithful member of Mt. Sheba Baptist Church for 57 years and cared for the church cemetery. He loved farming, and through the years became the Supervisor of the Shelton Compound: building many houses with his family as well as the barn and his family’s woodworking shop. After retirement, he spent many hours on the family land with his brother, Dallas. His family was his pride and joy, especially his only grandchild, Tyler. Kermit will be remembered as the calm strength of the family, and is dearly missed.
Those left behind to cherish his memory and know him as thy Lord’s good and faithful servant are his wife of 59 years, Patricia Rice Shelton; son, Tim Shelton and wife Alicia; grandchild, Tyler; brother, Dallas Shelton and wife Nancy; sisters-in-law, Barbara Malloy, Glenda Hensley, Linda Sue Rice, Brenda Welch, and Kathy Latham and husband Craig; brother-in-law, Glen Rice, Jr. and wife Anita; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Monday, August 4, 2025, at Mt. Sheba Baptist Church, 870 New Stock Road, Weaverville, with Rev. Steve Rhinehart and Rev. James Hensley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery that Kermit cared for the last several years as a member. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:15 p.m., prior to the service at the church.
