Kevin has not left my mind since I received a call that morning he passed. He was more than a friend to my family. He was more than a friend to me. If you knew Kevin, then you have not forgotten his smile. His example inspires me to this day, and the days ahead. Thank you for your sacrifice.
"Without a word this uniform also whispers of freezing troops, injured bodies, and American's left forever in foreign fields. It documents every serviceman's courage, who by accepting this uniform promises the one gift he truly has to give: his life. I wear my uniform for the heritage of sacrifice it represents and more. I wear this uniform with pride, for it represents the greatest nation of free people in the world."
-Col. Karen Dorman Kimmel
I am proud and humbled to wear the same uniform. To serve under the same flag.

I came home today and started to think of Kevin..I met him once at a family function right after 9/11..I am a member of the Woltmann family married to Walt and Junes daughter Sherri..I am a Marine Corps Vietnam Veteran. I have escorted fellow Marines killed in combat home to their families. I have never felt the emotions I carry now..At the funeral I tried to be tough when I came upon Marvin, Kevins father. The minute I touched his hand and we hugged..I wept !!! God bless you and may you always fly among the angels in the blue sky..Mike Kelly..

Class of 1983 has set many records world wide. I'm pretty sure Kevin has set the record for being so loyal to the residents of Ohio. Thanks Kevin for giving your best to Ohio. I appreciate your hard work. I also graduated in 1983 and as time passes it makes me experience mixed emotions about how my fellow '83classmates gave the ultimate while I got out of the ARMY alive. Thanks Kevin for doing what I couldn't. God Bless this Family,

Dear Sonnenberg Family:
I'm so sorry for the loss of your loved one, Kevin. I am from a Sonnenberg family in Minnesota, and my deepest sympathies go out to you. My nephew served in the National Guard in Iraq - and is now back in the U.S. He served for 24 months. I was searching for Sonnenberg info on the web and came to find your page. - I'm deeply sorry for your loss...from one Sonnenberg family to another. This is so cliche, but as someone who knows the toll a death can take, I wish you peace -

The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Kevin, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

THANK YOU!
Our most sincere thank you to everyone who had such kind words to say about Lt. Col. Kevin H. Sonnenberg, our son, husband, father, brother, uncle and forever our HERO! Kevin’s strong devotion to God, his family and his country is truly a source of inspiration and admiration to all who knew him. It is a great understatement to say we are all touched by your expressions of condolence at this, our time of mourning. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all our brave soldiers who continue to defend our great nation, their families and friends, and the families and friends of those soldiers who have paid the ultimate price so we can live in freedom. We owe them a debt that can never be repaid.
It is with great pride to announce that last winter, Kevin completed all necessary requirements for promotion, and that the military has approved his promotion from Major to Lieutenant Colonial. His hard work has paid off.

Dear Lorin and Carson,
I had the pleasure of taking care of your son Carson at the pre-school.I was so impressed to know much "Kevin" meant to Carson. He would always share with me how much he admired Kevin for flying the F-16 and that he would ask me questions to see if I knew as much as he did about the jets. Carson will always have a "hero" to look up to and remember when he gets a little older. I remember when my husband was at the 180th USAF Base in Toledo, and how proud he was to be there and to serve our country. Our service men are real "SPECIAL" guys and we can not for a moment forget that not for a second that things can get difficult. He was there during the Vietnam War Ara. I to then had the pleasure of meeting Lt. Colonel Sonnenberg and he always had a smile on his face, especially when Carson would ask him or tell him that he saw him fly over the pre-school on a certain day. He would smile from ear to ear. I would have loved to come to the funeral, but was not possible. You will always have those memories of the relationship you had together. Don't be afraid to share the tears with others as they all understand the pain you are feeling. When I had heard the news that a pilot was killed and in Iraq, I was hoping it was not someone that I knew. His death was so traggic and to soon for his life. May the Lord bless you in his arms and keep the FAITH as he will see you through it with those who love you. I loved the fact that Carson got a stuffed bear with the USAF uniform to have the day of the funeral for him to hold. Many blessing for you to keep. You have a special son and you can be very proud of him always. God Bless You Both at this time.

Too many people in our wonderful country do not understand that their freedom depends on people like Kevin and those of us who preceded him. "Freedom is not free." Thank you sir.

Words cannot express the loss that myself and my family feel over losing one of our best friends. Kev was a true inspiration for me and my family along with countless others that we trained with. We spent so much time together that was truly a blessing. His christian faith got him through many long and difficult situations. He is truly a guardian angel now. God's speed Kev

My Deepest sympathy and prayers go out to the family. I've known Kevin since 1992 when we started the whole flying experience together at Sheppard AFB, TX. He was always a postive light to us when times were hard.
We have lost a great man, but know he is with our lord and savior now.

With Deepest Sympathy
I did not know Kevin personally, but the his ultimate sacrific hit home. Kevin graduated from the same high school that I did, and Major Sonnenberg served next to the 555th Band in Swanton as my husband. Major Sonnenberg is a fellow Airman and a Patriot.

VICKIE & FAMILY,
NO MATTER HOW MANY PICTURES I SEE OF KEVIN, I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HIM AS A LITTLE TOEHEAD WITH A MISCHEVIOUS LOOK IN HIS EYE!! (AND, OF COURSE, THE BB.) IF THERE IS ONE THING THAT YOU TAUGHT THIS "CITY GIRL" IT WAS HOW VERY CLOSE A FAMILY AND COMMUNITY CAN BE AND I KNOW THAT YOU WILL GET THROUGH THIS WITH THE DIGNITY AND FAITH THAT KEVIN WOULD BE PROUD OF!
YOU ARE IN MY PRAYERS AND I LOVE YOU!

To the Family of Kevin H. Sonnenberg:
I am so sorry for your loss and wanted to tell you that I appreciated what Kevin did for us Americans here in the United States. He paid the ultimate price by sacrificing his life for ours. Just looking at his picture he looks like the type of guy that you would like to know. He is in God's military now enjoying what he liked to do best. May you find comfort and peace in God and know that he will be in our prayers. May God Bless you.......

I taught with Kevin at Northwood High School right after he graduated from college. He was a terrific man, one of the most fun people I have worked with. Although I have only seen him twice since he left to become a pilot, I know that he loved to fly and was doing what he loved the most. My sincere condolences are sent to the family. He will be missed by many.

Please except my sincere sympathy. Both being in the military and being in a long line of a military family as well as losing my husband at age 42 as well, I can understand your pain. Keep your faith in God. He has a plan! I know it's hard to see right now. It's been a year since I lost my husband and it's still hard. God Bless - My Prayers are with you!

To the family of Kevin Sonnenberg:
We were so saddened to hear the loss of one of our own in the 180th Fighter Wing. Our son, Jason has been with the 180th for 12 years and is currently deployed in Iraq. When one of our own makes the ultimate sacrafice, it hits all of us hard. Last week, Jason and his roommate, Ditzy painted a memorial to Kevin on one of the concrete barrier walls at Balad Air Base.
Our hearts go out to the family, his wife and son at this time and in the days ahead. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief.
May the wonderful memories you have of Kevin (Sonny) bring you comfort and joy in the days to come. Please accept our deepest condolences.
Sincerely, The Jack Logsdon Family

To the Sonnenberg Family:
Im truly sorry for your loss. I met Mr Sonnenberg once with his wife, Lorin, who was my language arts teacher. She always talked about how great of a person he was and she recently quit her job to hope and start a family with him and just to be with her family more. I feel horrible that this had to happen to such a nice guy and family and they are always in my prayers.
Rest In Peace <3
