Kevin Thomas Moriarty. August 11, 1958 – October 23, 2023, of Manassas Park, Virginia Kevin Thomas Moriarty was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on August 11th, 1958, To Bob and Virginia Moriarty on his brother, Mike's, second birthday, ruining that one for him. Preceded in death by parents, Robert and Virginia Moriarty. Survived by wife, Jeri; sister, Molly Moriarty; brother, Mike Moriarty (Barb); nieces, Katie Kumm (Bryan), Megan Walker (John), Brooke Poehling, Cassi Lewis (Clint); nephews, Cory, Taylor, and Austin Poehling; great nieces, Channa Lewis (Jordan Inman), Camryn Lewis, Josephine Kumm, Addie Walker; great nephews, Caleb and Asher Walker; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Gary and Shirley Hineline, sister-in-law Joni Poehling. He graduated from Omaha's Northwest High School. Post high school he earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he joined Air Force ROTC. Kevin had a life-long love of history, and his ROTC experience resulted in a special interest in military history. Kevin later earned a Master's in Museum Studies at the University of Nebraska, and a Master's in Geography at George Mason University. Growing up, Kevin loved family vacations, spending the night with his grandparents, visiting his great uncle and aunt, Tom and Harriett on their farm, and building models. He loved camping, the outdoors, and Boy Scouts, where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout and also earned the God & Country Award. His Eagle Scout project involved working with the mentally disabled which had sparked his interest in human services. Kevin worked in that field for a few years after his graduation from UNO, where he despised the bureaucracy but loved the clients. He cared deeply for people who have differing cognitive abilities. He served them in his human services career and in his career with the National Park Service, making sure that the programs he presented were accessible to everyone. Kevin began working for the NPS as a ranger at Homestead National Monument, where he re-enacted 19th century homesteading, restored a tall grass prairie, and battled many ticks. He later worked at Wind Cave National Park, the National Park Service Midwest Archaeological Center, and the Old Post Office Tower. In 1997, he began working at the National Register of Historic Places, where he remained for the rest of his career. He always wanted to work at one of the National Park Service's military parks but this never happened. Instead this desire was fulfilled by a part-time job at Historic Alexandria's Fort Ward Museum, where worked for two decades. Kevin had a great love for Irish music and culture. This led to his meeting Jeri Hineline at a Touch of Irish Music fundraiser aboard the Belle of Brownville during a Missouri River excursion. He and Jeri were married on May 30th, 1992. They were happily married for 31 years. They were so compatible that during their long marriage they only had three fights. They could only remember two, but said three in case they forgot one. Jeri won a trip to Rome in 2000, which was a Jubilee year for the Catholic Church. Being able to walk through the Holy Door and visiting the sites of Saint Peter's ministry inspired Kevin and Jeri to convert to the Church. Kevin was a man of deep faith who believed in service to others. He volunteered in the RCIA & RCIC program at All Saints Church in Manassas for fifteen years, where he led many souls to Christ. He reluctantly gave up this ministry when he was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer in 2016. He fought the disease for seven years, never losing his faith or optimism. As Kevin grew older he began to resemble Santa Claus. His appearance, along with his good humor and gentle disposition resulted in his being drafted to stand in for the real Santa at Homestead National Monument and Fort Ward Museum. Kevin was loved by Jeri, his family, many friends, and coworkers. He will be treasured and remembered for the love he gave others. Memorials to St.Vincent de Paul Society or your local animal shelter.
