Kevin Obando Obituary

Kevin Aleksei Obando age 17, a resident of 1108 Deer Tract Drive, Washington, NC died Sunday, February 10, 2019. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Harvest Church officiated by Pastor Brian Oliver. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 PM until the service hour at the church. Kevin Aleksei Obando, 17, of Washington, NC, died February 10, 2019. He was born January 31st, 2002 in Darby, Delaware County Pennsylvania, the son of Mario and Natalya Obando. He attended Abeka Academy School while simultaneously attending his second semester of an early college program at Beaufort County Community College, aiming to further his education at ECU majoring in Orthodontics. Kevin was a member of the youth program at Harvest Church in Washington, N.C. led by associate Pastor Brian Oliver. Kevin a born again Christian, was somebody who always listened to people never left anyone out and had a real passion for serving others. He was a very caring, gentle soul. A tender and compassionate young person, full of laughter and very funny, always putting the needs of others before his own. A very descriptive and talented painter, writer and cartoon artist; Kevin created various comic books to express his thoughts and feelings, one of those books was used during VBS by Pastor Brian Oliver as an outreach tool. Kevin's home was in Washington, N.C. It was here he was able to spend wonderful time with his family and favorite dog Maya, take countless walks throughout the neighborhood, parks, the woods and waterfront. He had true appreciation for the outdoors. He loved his sister, Nicole-his partner in crime, they laughed together, went places together, play games together the connection was there, truly wonderful to watch. Nicole's character was a role model for him. It was the simple things around him in life that he never took for granted, commenting daily how fortunate and thankful he was. Above all Kevin was a true believer in the Lord Jesus Christ's love and the beauty and peace that would await him after his passing as documented in his daily journal. His favorite scripture was Hebrew 11, the great faith chapter. Kevin is survived by his parents Mario and Natalya of Washington, NC; his sister Yekaterina of Anchorage, Alaska and his sister Nicole at home. He also leaves his maternal grandparents, Fyodor and Klavdiya of Lesnoi, Russia. He is also survived by his girlfriend, Alexis Asby of Pinetown, NC and his close friends Mason and Jacob of Washington, NC and several aunts, uncles, nieces and cousins. I cannot find words to express the sense of loss and tragedy for me that this has occurred.

Kevin was so very remarkable, and so very genuine. He was extraordinarily gifted. It was a joy to be involved and working with someone so young with such qualities that he had, and this is how he will be remembered by me.

My condolences are extended to the family and to all whose lives were touched by him. He was truly a gifted, and genuine person.

We knew Kevin when the Obando family lived here in NJ and we attended church with them. One of the many memories we have of Kevin is when at a very young age he cited from memory a whole batch of scripture verses in front of the congregation at Maranatha Church. He was truly a blessing to us all! Words cannot express our sadness. Know that we grieve with you over his loss.

Kevin was in my math class. We sat beside each other everyday and became pretty good friends. He helped me out a lot, not just when I was struggling with the math, but he always reassured me with his smile, laughter, and kindness that things would get better. He was the sweetest guy around, and I will never forget him. This news shook my world, as well as many others who got to know him. There was a math test Monday. When he didn't show up, I couldn't help but worry and wonder if something had happened. I am so sorry for this loss. But when you are upset about this occurrence, please remember all the lives he touched and how his kindness did nothing but help others. And to his parents: You did amazing with your son. I hope my son holds his relationship with the Lord as tight as Kevin did. I hope my son is just as great of a man as he was. I am thankful for knowing your son.
