Kevin Whitaker Obituary

Published by Claire Brothers Funeral Home - Houston from Dec. 30 to Dec. 31, 2020.
Kevin Lee Whitaker, Sr., age 51, was born June 23, 1969 in Beaumont, Texas and passed away December 22, 2020.

Kevin graduated from Vidor High School, Vidor, Texas and then graduated from Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas.

Kevin is survived by his wife, Jennifer Whitaker; children, Kevin (Lee) Whitaker, Jr., Madeline Whitaker Tatum and husband, Matthew Tatum, Preston Whitaker and Aaron Whitaker; George David Whitaker, Madeline (Carole) Wilkerson Whitaker; parents, J.M. Wilkerson and Madeline Mizell; mother-in-law, Alta Sue Magee; brother, David (Terry) Whitaker; sisters in laws, Suzanne Magee, Peggy Munk, Connie and husband, Samuel Said and his dog, Sam.

He is preceded in death by his sister, Sharon Lea Whitaker; father-in-law, James Magee; grandparents, Ollie Mizell, Madeline Mizell, Jesse W. Whitaker and Nina V. Swindell.

Kevin was a faithful man to God, family and friends. Kevin and his wife of 26 years had an unbreakable bond. He was a great role model and teacher for their four children, whom he sometimes picked on without mercy. They all developed that great skill and were happy to reciprocate. His hobbies included studying Bible Doctrine under the direction of R.B. Thieme, Jr., politics, family time, road trips with his wife, and volunteering as an umpire for Little League, which is an underappreciated and often criticized role.

He was probably most known for his enthusiasm around the Little League volunteer umpire programs. He met many people of great character. He loved to be and encouraged/trained others to be a Little League volunteer umpire. His best memory of umpiring came in 2016 when he was selected to umpire behind home plate for the championship game of the LL Southwest Regional Tournament in Waco, Texas, which was televised on ESPN.

Kevin's family wishes to thank everyone for their kind words and generous contributions in this unexpected loss. We all know he is with God and will be greatly missed.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Claire Brothers Funeral Home, 7901 Hillcroft Street, Houston, Texas 77081.

Umpired with Kevin in the 2016 regional Tournament and had him for a student at the regional umpire classes over the years. He was a great family man and a man of faith i always had a good time in conversation talking about almost anything but especially baseball and umpiring. Never saw him or talked to him without his patented smile. His volunteerism and dedication to the Little League program was special and he and his family devoted there spring and summers to ensure the youth in his neighborhood and beyond had the best experience possible. This type of dedication is rare especially by todays standards. Some of my favorite moments was helping him umpire in one of the Houston urban tournaments for at risk youths and visiting with him and Jennifer on a trip to the Little League world series a few summers back. Condolences to Jennifer and the family you are in my prayers.

I’m glad to have been someone that Kevin relentlessly picked on while volunteering at the regional tournament. I loved that he fondly would talk about calling up to the press box during his championship plate and hearing me speaking back to him, and that he remembered that as part of his special memory of the 2016 tournament. We sat together during my first trip to the LLWS. We umpired at Parkwood (D-25) and around D-14, D-15, and D-16 together for every non-pandemic year since I started. I would always relax when I saw his gray van in the parking lot on game days, and it would never fail where he’d say “let’s wear red” or “let’s wear white” (never the boring black or powder blue unless we had to) — he always loved the diverse colors of the umpire shirts. A hard worker, he was always kind. One of a kind, there will never be another like him, and I know a great light in this world has left us far too soon. Godspeed, my friend. I’ll see you when I get there.
