Khalid Shahid Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 17, 2001.
Three Passions and a Plan

Khalid Shahid and his fiancée, Jamie Castro, had everything planned. They were building a house in Mount Olive, N.J., close to Union, where he grew up and where his parents still live. They were to marry in November. When the first baby came, Leonor Shahid, his mother, was going to quit her job to baby-sit while her son and daughter-in-law were at work.

Mr. Shahid, 25, had three passions:

Computers. He was a network systems administrator at eSpeed;

Sports. He had been in the ski club and tennis club at Montclair State University. "He was very, very fond of skiing," Mrs. Shahid said;

Most of all, his family, present and future. "His idea was to create a family just like ours," his mother said. He had a younger sister and brother. His father, Syed, an engineer, came from Pakistan, and his mother was from Colombia. "He'd tell us all the time, he was so proud."

Khalid Shahid, 25, he was building a life The new house Khalid Shahid and his fiancée were building in Mt. Olive was expected to be completed next month. And plans for a March 2002 wedding to his high school sweetheart were in full swing.

Intensely devoted to his family and his fiancée, Jamie Castro, Mr. Shahid of Union Township saw the construction of the couple's dream house and the marriage as the first step in starting a loving and close-knit family of his own.

"He used to say, 'Mom, we have such an awesome family.' He believe in that so strongly that he wanted to have the same things for himself," said his mother, Leonor Shahid.

But those dreams abruptly ended with the Sept. 11 terror attack at the World Trade Center. Mr. Shahid, 25, who worked as computer network administrator for Cantor Fitzgerald, was in his office on the 103rd floor of the World Trade Center's North Tower when the first hijacked jetliner struck the building.

Family members recalled Mr. Shahid as a sports enthusiast who not only loved his family and was devoted to Castro, but also was respected by and loved the company of a close circle of friends.

"He was very family-oriented. He said he wanted to marry early so he could have the same type of family," his father, Syed Shahid, said. "We are a very close family. We care for each other and we are always together."

Born in Union, Mr. Shahid attended Union High School where he played soccer, baseball and tennis and participated in the marching band. He attended Montclair State University where focused on tennis. He was team captain during his senior year.

He graduated from Montclair in 1999 with a degree in computer science.

Throughout college, he continued dating Castro, whom he had met during his senior year in high school.

Castro, 24, of Springfield said the couple was planning to marry next March.

"Family was most important to him and it was also for me, so it was perfect," said Castro, a fifth grade teacher in Livingston. "We have been together for eight years -- true high school sweethearts. Everything was going perfect. We did everything the right way.

"Then this happened. We don't know why this happened to us," she said.

Both Castro and Mr. Shahid's parents say they take comfort in knowing that the man they loved lived a full and unselfish life, always giving of himself.

"He was a perfect gentleman, a real nice kid," his father said. "He enjoyed every minute of his life. He never wasted time."

In addition to his parents and fiancée, Mr. Shahid is survived by a brother, Jaffer, and a sister, Fatima, both of Union.

A memorial service will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the McCracken Funeral Home, 1500 Morris Ave., Union. The family will be receiving friends between noon and 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers and gifts, the family requests that donations be made to the Khalid Shahid Memorial Scholarship, Westfield Foundation, P.O. Box 2295, Westfield, N.J. 07091.

Thank you to those who posted for my cousin Khalid. I never met him as I lived in Australia and had never met him

9/11 was the unfortunate way of how I found out about him. I got to know about him through cousind who had met him, his friends who left tributes to him online and a few years later by meeting his family. Its heartwarming to see people still leaving tributes for him

The more I read about him, the more I feel that I was deprived of an opportunity to meet a remarkable person who has left a lasting and very positive impact on people's lives

Thank you to all who still remember him

Khalid, Thinking about you on this day. I can still hear your laugh and remeniss of the many ski trips and road trips to Vermont and New York. As so many have said you were one of the most unselfish people I have ever met. Always positive and always willing to lend a hand.
Even 15 years later I remember the day we lost you as if it was yesterday. You will always be remembered and never forgotten. You were one of the good ones. This world was a better place while you were here. I wish you were here.

Khalid it is now 09/11/2013 and I still miss u like cray brother. At such a young age you were still a role model for all of us. Just to be generous, caring, good people. I now am married with a 3 year old Marty and will be blessed with a little girl in a month. We will most likely name her Sam (Samantha). Ty for being one of the greatest people I have ever met. Love you bro.

Khalid,

(Kualkan)I'll never forget you. You were my buddy for so many years from Burnet Jr. High and I'll never forget our memories in class and more importantly on the soccer field. From Union Soccer League through Varsity we all had so many great memories. I'm glad we were able to share more good times at the Boys n Girls Club playing soccer with all of our childhood buddies. I've moved away from NJ but I have a picture of you in my office. I think about you and your family all the time and you hold a special place in my heart.

Your friend,

Joe

Khalid,

We shared many classes together at Franklin School and beyond. (I still remember you playing the trumpet in Mr. Trager's elementary school band!) While we didn't know each other well, everyone knew you as a funny, talented, thoughtful and kind guy.

I suppose I've always wanted to let you know that every year, on this day, I think of you. I'm sorry your time here was far too short. But, clearly, you made an impact on the lives of many.

It's so hard to sum up Khalid in just a few words. Not a day goes by that I don't think of him. He showed me what it truly means to live life.

Khalid embraced everything...and he was good at everything he did. He never looked back on the things that tear most people down. It was impossible to get in his way. He had it all figured out, and it was so inspiring to be around him.

I wish he was here.

I will never forget cheering for Khalid as he played soccer for Union High School. I will always remember him for the wonderful guy he was. My prayers are with his family and friends who face each new day after this tragedy, especially Jamie. Though I never met you, Jamie, my heart breaks for you and I pray that you will be strong and carry on knowing that Khalid is your angel in heaven.

I was privileged to wear the name badge of Khalid M. Shahid while singing the Mozart "Requiem" at the Albright College Chapel in Reading, PA on 9/11. We were part of the "Rolling Requiem" around the world in which almost 200 choral groups sang the Mozart "Requiem" to honor those who died on 9/11. The downbeat was at 8:46 am with every chorus that sang. All choral members were assigned badges with names of those who died. I sang in memory of Khalid. Even though I never met him and do not know his family I have lifted up prayers for his family and loved ones. He sounds like he was a wonderful person and I too grieve for all those who loved him and miss him. May God bless and keep you always. You are not alone in your grief.

Dearest Shahid Family,

There are only two words that describes Khalid and that is "Great Man", I'm so glad I had the opportunity to work and have Khalid as a "FRIEND". It didn't matter the type of person you were, Khalid always saw the good in people. I have never in life met anyone so wonderful like him. What I miss the most of Khalid was his ability to make me laugh when I was sad. If there's anything that I learned from him it was to live life full, and do what your heart desires. What was most important to Khalid was his Family, never stopped talking about his dreams and his future with Jaime. Khalid never had a bad day at work, in fact he had a strong positive energy that would light up our IT department every single day. No matter how bad things were in the office, Khalid always found the good in all. I will never forget all the times he gave me a ride to our office in New Jersey, he always offered and never hesitated.

Khalid has touched my heart in a very special way and he will always have a special place in my heart. He will always be remembered in our hearts.

Rest In Peace my friend.

To Jaffer & the Shahid Family,

I am so sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

We were all talking so fondly of you and Khalid at work today. Everyone commented on what a great guy you are, Jaffer. And how Khalid was such a great friend, too. How he always saw the best in everyone & how he touched so many of us with...if not with his kind words, then with his awesome smile!

You both are truly missed in the office.

The day of Khalid's Memorial, I wrote a poem for him. It's my form of solace and comfort to why I think God needs Khalid with him. I hope it brings the same sort of comfort for you, your family and Jamie as it does me.

Always in my thoughts & prayers,

Mare

"God Needed A Friend"

by Marigrace Iodice

Did God need another angel?

Or someone He knew that would care?

Someone who always thought of others

And when needed…was always there.

Did God need another angel?

Or someone to be more helpful in Heaven above?

Even though you were treasured here on Earth

I guess He noticed your kindness & your love.

Did God need another angel?

Or someone He knew was worthwhile?

Someone to share in His spiritual inspirations

And someone with an awesome smile!

I guess God watched you from Heaven

And choose someone He knew was special

Many nights I’ve cried to God in anger

“Why did You need another angel?”

And then the answer hit me

And...it’s quite simple

For now, I’m no longer saddened,

Because, God DID need another angel

…but he also needed a friend!

(In Loving Memory of a Very Special Person

and a Very Special Friend...

Khalid Shahid

...Just as you were loved, so shall you be missed)

I feel so blessed to have been friends with Khalid. He is what I consider to be a true friend. There are so many wonderful memories that I have of him, like the first time that I met him in the sixth grade, growing up with him in Union, playing soccer together, being his college roommate, or listening to that contagious laugh of his that would make you forget all about your worries.

He was such a caring person who would drop everything to lend you a helping hand. I am so very thankful for all of his support and advice throughout college because if it were not for him, I probably would have never graduated. I admired the way he lived each day to the fullest. It encouraged me to do the same as I watched him enjoy and experience everything that this world has to offer. Not one single day was taken for granted. Even now, I still wonder how he found the time to do all that he did. Khalid was such an amazing person that even if you had only known him for 5 minutes, he would have left such an impression on you that you would have never been able to forget him.

It truly has been incredible for me to have been a part of Khalid’s life for the past 14 years. He was not only a good friend of mine, but someone who taught me how to be kind and helpful to everyone, and to enjoy the gift of life that has been given to all of us. There is not a single day that passes by that I do not think about Khalid and what an impact he had on me. I am a better person for having known him and I appreciate the friendship that we had so very much.

Hanging out with Khalid the night before September 11th leaves me grateful to have been given that one last opportunity to speak with him. I will never forget Khalid and all of the great memories that I have of him.

He will live in my heart forever!

Khalid I miss you! I wonder if you got my message on the 10th, Beverly told me how mad you were about the layoff's, how I wish you were included in them with me.

Jamie if you read this please get in touch with me, I cant find any information on the Cantor sites about Khalid. I think about you and Khalid and the life you never got to start together everyday. He would come in every Monday and tell me about the house you were building and the wedding in March and how excited he was. You are both in my prayers and I would like to speak to you when you feel up to it.

Love, Kate

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
