Professor Kim Renee Gordon, of
Petersburg, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg. She was a woman of great love, strength, kindness, compassion, and fashion. Her infectious smile, generous heart, and unwavering dedication to her students and community will forever be remembered.
Kim was born on October 30, 1968, in
Petersburg, Virginia to Clarence Gordon and Valerie Nichols. She was proceeded in death by her parents, Richard Williams Sr. and Valerie Williams and her sister Valerie Hudley.
A proud graduate of Virginia State University, Kim earned her Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Mathematics Education and was currently pursuing her Doctor of Education in Educational Administration and Supervision.
Over the course of more than three decades, Professor Gordon became a beloved teacher, mentor, and leader. She served as a mathematics teacher in Petersburg, Johnston County, Chesterfield County, and Northampton County public schools, where she inspired young minds through courses in Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Algebra, and Computer Math. She later brought her passion for teaching to higher education, serving as an instructor at Virginia State University, Elizabeth City State University, and John Tyler Community College.
At Virginia State University, Kim's impact was especially profound. As a mathematics instructor and statistics course coordinator, she taught College Algebra, Trigonometry, Statistics, and Basic Mathematics. Beyond the classroom, she championed innovation in education, serving as a facilitator for Code.org and Code Virginia, training teachers to integrate computer science into mathematics. She shared her knowledge widely through research, presentations, and workshops across the country. Kim also devoted herself to service through leadership and committee work, including the Academy of Faculty Enrichment Steering Committee, the VSU Regional Design Team, and conferences such as Women Leaders at HBCUs and A Day in LeadHERship. She was a proud member of the Kiwanis Club, advisor to VSU Circle K International, and was recognized with numerous honors including the IOTA Outstanding Leadership Award, YMCA Humanitarian Award, and membership in Kappa Mu Epsilon, the Mathematics Honor Society.
Kim was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan!
While Kim accomplished much in her professional life, her greatest joy and proudest role was being a mother. Left to cherish her memory are her loving and devoted twin daughters, Jaliyah and Janiyah Howard; brothers, Richard Williams III (Marquis), Rashard Gordon, and Calvin Seaborne; her niece, Jada Coleman (Kavonta); her great-niece, Journie Coleman; her aunts, Amanda Bowens, Pacing Williams-Dugger (Lee), and Betty "Bertine" Hardy; uncles, Jonathan Williams and Reginald Williams; her loving extended family, including her godmother, Gerlene Campbell; Uncle Pugie (Horace Campbell), aunt, Cynthia Brown; her favorite cousin, Dr. Linda Terry- Mombo (Mien Mombo), and Kelisa Vaughn (Cajuin Vaughan). She also leaves behind cherished friends Jocelyn Josey Harris, Toni Davis, Cherelle White, Jonathan Johnson,Bethel Rawlings and Linda Butcher; and her beloved Virginia State University family, along with a host of cousins, great aunts, and extended relatives.
Kim's legacy will live on in the lives she touched through her teaching, mentorship, and love. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered by her family, friends, students, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11am, Friday, October 3, 2025 at Mount Olivet Baptist Church, 800 Augusta Ave.,
Petersburg, VA. Public visitation will be held from 6-8pm, Thursday, October 2, 2025 at the Petersburg chapel of Bland Funeral Home, 137 Harrison Street, Petersburg.
