Kim A. Shimkus, age 63 of
Alhambra, IL, died Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at Hitz Memorial Home in
Alhambra, IL.
She was born on Wednesday, June 20, 1962, in
Highland, IL, the daughter of Robert and Ruth (nee Suhre) Hosto.
On Saturday, October 18, 1986, she married Alexander R. Shimkus at Salem church in
Alhambra, IL.
She was a member of Wildwood Presbyterian Church of Grayslake, IL.
Kim was born in
Highland, Illinois and grew up in Alhambra on her family's farm. She was a 1980 graduate of Highland High School. Kim attended the University of Illinois and did her student teaching in Chicago where she met her husband, Alex. After marrying, they lived in the Detroit area until moving to Carbondale for Alex to attend law school. Kim was a big supporter of Alex as he went to law school. They moved to Peoria, where Kim started her career with Crafts Magazine as a senior editor. They later moved to Grayslake before settling in Northbrook, as Alex took a lawyer position for Allstate Insurance. For the last 8+ years, Kim bravely battled ovarian cancer. They moved back to Alhambra in June so she could be closer to family. Kim was widely respected and loved by all she knew. While under treatment for cancer, Kim organized annual cancer walks with the Cancer Wellness Center, affiliated with Northwestern University in Chicago, which turned into a big event. Kim enjoyed crafting as well as antiquing. She loved and adored her black long-haired cat, Inky.
