Death Notice

Kirk Ray Worthington

1966 - 2023

Kirk Ray Worthington returned to his Heavenly home on Friday, December 8th. He passed away from complications sustained from a mountain biking accident and subsequent brain injury just over five years ago.
Kirk was born in Price, Utah on February 19, 1966 to Paul Ray Worthington and Twila Mary (Bates) Worthington. He spent some time as a child in Spokane, WA and Great Falls, MT and then ended up in Billings, MT when he was 9 years old. He graduated from Billings West High School in 1984. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Nevada, Las Vegas Mission from September 1985 to October 1987. Kirk went to school at Ricks College in Rexburg, ID for a couple of years before going to live and work in Provo, UT where he met the love of his life: BYU sports. In September of 1992, he met the true love of his life, Marlayne Richards, in their student ward where she was attending school at BYU. He was impressed by her athletic skills, among other things, and in June of 1993, they were married for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City Temple.
They settled in Billings where they raised their eight children. Kirk graduated from MSU-Billings in Communications and worked as a residential construction manager for over twenty years for Wells Built Homes. Kirk had such a zest for life! However, nothing compared to the passion he had for his family and spending as much time with them as possible. Kirk loved nothing more than hanging out with his family, whether that was in the backyard playing ball, trips to Provo for BYU games, coaching countless sports teams, trips to Holiday to get a pop, fishing, hunting, road trips, blasting music, or late night movies. Kirk was a friend to all and lived by the words: "a stranger is just a friend you haven't met yet." He spent most of his adult years serving with the Young Men's Organization in the church and found joy in helping them come to know their Savior. His church mission was one of the highlights of his life, and it brought him great joy to help other young men work toward and prepare for that same experience. His own children have followed in his footsteps and answered the call to serve in Spain, Bolivia, Seattle, and Newport Beach. He currently has two sons spreading the gospel on the islands of Barbados and Fiji. He has spent his time as a father helping his children and others build a foundation on Jesus Christ.
Kirk was most known for his quick wit, Pinewood Derby winning streak, creative and artistic wood carvings, quirky way of speaking (often known as Kirkisms), fascination with weather, whistling, attention to detail, taste in music, gift of persuasion, and bending rules. He loved sneaking into stadiums and theaters, ticket in hand, prior to opening to the public just for the satisfaction of beating the system.
Kirk is preceded in death by his father, Paul Ray Worthington and niece, Lisa Kay Huband. Kirk is survived by his wife Marlayne and their eight children: Makelle (Sam) Magnusson, Brennon, Dallin (MacKenzie), Ashlyn (Taggart) Chandler, Kade, Colby, Camden, and Hudson; his mother Twila Bates Worthington; his siblings: Ryan (Kris) Worthington, Julane (Dan) Wells, Lana (Dave) Huband, Jill (Greg) Jepperson, and Scott (Becky) Worthington; and many nieces and nephews.
