Kreig Avery Obituary

Kreig Allen Avery, a man of honor, warmth, and unwavering dedication to his family and country, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2025, in Petoskey, Michigan. Born during a fierce blizzard on March 23, 1955, in Gaylord, Michigan, Kreig was the spirited son of Merwyn "Chum" and Lillian (Geigler) Avery. His early life in Gaylord was marked by a close-knit community and a family that instilled in him the values of hard work, loyalty, and the joy of life's simple pleasures.
Kreig graduated from Gaylord High School in 1974, where he was celebrated for his athletic prowess, particularly in football. His infectious laughter often echoed on the basketball court, even as he was chided for his humorous double-dribbling antics. After high school, Kreig proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps, stationed in Spain during the Cold War. His service was a time of profound growth and camaraderie, especially with fellow Gaylord locals David Lawnichak, Jon Secord, and Daniel Richardson.
Following his honorable discharge, Kreig furthered his education at Kirtland Community College, where he pursued a degree in aviation mechanics. This training led to a fulfilling career at Cooper-Standard, where he dedicated 33 years.
Kreig was a man who savored the simple moments, whether it was sipping his beloved coffee or engaging in his many outdoor hobbies. Fishing, boating, camping, and snowmobiling were among his favorite pursuits, and he was happiest when sharing these pastimes with his children, Travis, Jeremy (Amanda), and Lanette. Kreig also had a passion for fixing cars and could often be found tinkering in his garage, a testament to his belief that there was nothing that couldn't be fixed with a little patience and elbow grease.
Family was the cornerstone of Kreig's life. He was a devoted brother to Keith (Sandy) and Kent (Sally) Avery, and brother-in-law to Karen Avery. Kreig held a special place in his heart for his extended family members, with whom he shared countless cherished memories. Although he was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Kalvin, and his nephew Doug Simcek, the legacy of love and laughter he left behind will continue to resonate with all who knew him.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 5, 2025, with visitation at the funeral home beginning at 11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. at Nelsons Funeral Home, 135 N. Center Avenue, Gaylord, Michigan 49735. Pastor Donn Broeker from Calvary Baptist Church will officiate the services.
