Kristi Noel Bumgarner Smith, a cherished educator, devoted family member, and beloved member of her community, left this world on June 11, 2025, enveloped in the warmth of her loved ones. Born on November 30, 1966, in Mooresville, NC, Kristi's journey through life was marked by her unwavering commitment to family, faith, and education.
From an early age, Kristi's passion for learning and teaching blossomed. She attended North Mecklenburg High School, where she graduated in 1985, and later pursued her dream at Appalachian State University, earning a degree in elementary education in 1989. Kristi's career as an educator began at Cornelius Elementary School that same year, paving the way for a legacy that would profoundly impact countless students and their families. Throughout her distinguished career, she served in multiple capacities, including Assistant Principal at both Rock Springs and Catawba Springs Elementary Schools. After 17 years at Catawba Springs, she retired with the honor of having spent the last 14 years as the school's Principal.
Kristi's life was defined by her dedication to others and her love for her family and community. She was raised in the nurturing environment of Cornelius Presbyterian Church, where she not only grew in her faith but also became an Elder, embracing her role with grace and humility. Her devotion to her church was a cornerstone of her life, reflecting her deep commitment to serve and uplift those around her.
Happiness, for Kristi, was found in simple pleasures—whether it was spending time with her family, friends, and beloved dogs, enjoying trips to the beach or mountains, snow skiing, visiting Disney, or cheering on the Appalachian football team. These moments of joy exemplified her zest for life and her unconditional love for those she held dear.
Kristi is survived by her devoted husband of 35 years, Neal Smith; their two loving daughters, Malea and Keeley Smith; and her mother, Sharyon Bumgarner. She is also remembered fondly by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Jamey and Michele Bumgarner, and Jeremy and Angie Bumgarner, along with cherished niece Anna Carney and nephews Caleb Bumgarner, Adam Bumgarner, and Thomas Caldwell. Her mother-in-law, Mary Lee Smith, siblings-in-law Larry and Lee Caldwell, and sister-in-law Lysa Deaton-Smith will also hold her memory close to their hearts.
Though Kristi will be dearly missed, she is now in Heaven with the Lord, where she is reunited with her father, Jimmy Bumgarner Sr., her brother-in-law Alex Smith, and her father-in-law Newton Smith. The legacy of love and light she leaves behind will continue to inspire all who knew her.
