Kurt Fredland Obituary

Kurt Roger Fredland, 76, of Houston, TX, passed away at his lake house on Lake Livingston TX on Thursday, October 3, 2024. Born in Annapolis September 19, 1948, to Dr. Roger and Dorothy Fredland, Kurt was the middle child among five brothers. He graduated from Annapolis High School in 1966 and attended Princeton University on a Navy ROTC scholarship, earning a degree in Economics and graduating with the class of 1970. Following his graduation, he was commissioned as a Naval Surface Warfare Officer, serving with distinction in multiple commands in both the Pacific and the Atlantic. While stationed in San Diego, CA, Kurt met the love of his life, the former Nina Marie Sciortino of Staten Island, NY. They married on October 7, 1973, embarking on a 51-year marriage. After completing his naval service, Kurt pursued further education, earning an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1976. Kurt and Nina moved to Houston, TX, in late 1976, where he began a successful 40+ year career in the financial industry, working for First City Texas Bank and Western National. Together, they raised three children and were blessed with 13 grandchildren. Kurt retired from the financial industry in 2015, splitting his time between homes in Houston, Nantucket, and Lake Livingston. He devoted his retirement to supporting his wife in her career, enjoying "Papa" time with his grandchildren, and admiring sunsets across the lake. Kurt was a family man who cherished his wife and was always there for his children through various sports and school events. He appreciated many different genres of music, from Mozart to Leonard Cohen, and could be heard loudly singing in the pew on Sundays. He was a long-time blood donor, taking pride in having donated over 15 gallons throughout his life. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Kurt is survived by his beloved wife, Dr. Nina Fredland; his children, Mari, Nick, and Jon; his brothers, Eric, Robert, and Mark; and his 13 grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating blood to a local blood center: or monetary donations to support "Blood Services" at the American Red Cross.

I'm so sorry to hear about this belatedly. I grew up with Kurt in his neighborhood and went to school with him. I still remember fondly the wild Halloween parties at his house. We used to play softball and football in the Beadles' yard behind Kurt's house, and we canoed on the Severn River together. We met again in 1984-5 in Houston, when we were both living their with our families. In fact, Nina helped with the birth of our son Joseph. He was a wonderful friend.

I was a college roommate with Kurt. Kurt was always a friend and supporter and good fun to be with. The story I have of Kurt was one he actually told me. Kurt was not one, at school at any rate, to be completely on top of assignments. He told me a story once that seemed to fit Kurt well. In grade school his class all had to do a special report on Indians (I believe that's what it was). Anyway, the day came when they were due and he hadn't really started his yet. The teacher used this occasion to call students individually to her desk to place their report on a stack of Indian reports. So when his name was called Kurt walked up to the desk and just put his hand on the stack (while the teacher was apparently looking down, reading and checking off her student list). Kurt walked back to his desk and, he said, never heard anything about his lack of an Indian report.
