L. Vern Mason, 84, a beloved father, brother, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, October 24, 2025 in Bellingham, Washington. He was born in Portland, Oregon, on April 4, 1941 the son to Howell and Mildred (Grebe) Mason, he spent his early years in Eagle Creek, Oregon.

After attending Estacada High School, Vern worked a variety of jobs, including logging, before attending a Large Equipment Operator School, where he learned to operate and maintain bulldozers, graders, forklifts, excavators, and large trucks. Vern went on to drive logging trucks for several years before spending the remainder of his career behind the wheel of 18-wheelers. His work ethic and dedication were unmatched, and he took great pride in his craft and in helping others learn it as well.

He is survived by his sons, David, Tim, Kenny Mason; daughter, Bonnie Hodgin; his brother, Allan Mason; his sisters Alice Campbell, Margie Falkenberg, Audrey Lasater; many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and friends who will forever cherish his memory.

Vern was preceded in death by his three brothers Earl, Donald, and Lowell; his daughter, Sheron.

Those who knew Vern will fondly remember his stories from his trucking days and his adventures logging in Alaska. He had a kind heart, a generous spirit, and a deep sense of loyalty to his family and friends.

From his children:

Kenny shares, "Dad always said he wasn't a Christian, but I think Grandma Mason's faith rubbed off on him a bit in his youth. He had the kindest heart toward everyone, and that showed in everything he did."

Tim remembers, "Dad was always there for us. No matter what the situation was, we knew we could count on him for encouragement and support. He was a hardworking man, devoted to his family. Dad taught me how to operate and maintain heavy equipment skills that became the foundation of my lifelong career. I remember him with love, respect, and appreciation."

Bonnie shares, "Dad was a very special man. He instilled a strong work ethic in all of us, but he also made work fun. Cutting wood with him always ended in a bonfire and a picnic that was just Dad's way. He was spontaneous, always ready for an adventure or a camping trip. He worked hard, cared deeply, and always made sure we were safe. We will truly miss him."
