L.A. Owens Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Elgin Funeral Home on Mar. 12, 2026.
The Steps Of A Good Man…

On March 14, 2026, we gather here today to celebrate the remarkable life of LA Owens, known to many as Peter, which shows his steps were guided by a good man, led by Jesus. As Peter traveled his journey from June 22, 1946, to March 2, 2026, overcoming many trials and celebrating many triumphs…he never took his eyes off of Jesus, embracing his faith with unwavering conviction and love. His Aunt Lula Mae Jones named him LA and gave him the nickname "Peter", which followed him through his life.

Peter was born to Chester and Margie Owens in the small community of Elgin, Texas. He attended the local schools of Elgin Independent School District and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1964. Peter attended Winn's Memorial Baptist Church with his family for a season.

At the age of five, Peter experienced a great lost in his family, his mother and two sisters, and his father after saving him from the house fire – spent many days and months in the hospital. LA went to spend the night with his Aunt Mae (his mother's sister) and her family. They surrounded him with much love and care – they became his family. LA gained a second set of parents and five sisters, all who love him dearly. They spoiled him as well as whipped him. Yet, LA, our little Peter, grew up and became very successful and well-liked and respected. He gained a heritage that would shape his character and values throughout his lifetime.

A man of great compassion and dedication, LA dedicated thirty – one years of service as a carrier for the Law Office of Spivey and Grigg, L.L.P. He was there from 1983 to 2014, many of his family thought he was a lawyer, always carrying a briefcase. In the fall of 2014, Peter went to work for EISD as a utility driver, there he became known as the Bishop Sisters little brother. LA retired after ten years. They felt he was a precious gift bestowed upon them by our Lord in Heaven – a boy with five girls, who later became their Hero.

LA was a die – hard Dallas Cowboy fan and a University of Texas top ten cheerleader. He loved his family, embracing them all, for the fear that hunted him, the fire. He enjoyed the monthly trips to the casino of choice and his special annual trip to Retama, Texas. His favorite were all the family gatherings, especially the Memorial Day Weekend in Shreveport, Louisiana. In his retirement stage of life, he preferred his board numbers and a large screen TV.

With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to LA, our little Peter, as he embarks on his journey to join our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Peter entered Heavens Gates as he peacefully transcended from this earthly realm to everlasting peace. He is preceded in death by his mother, Margie and two young sisters: his father, Chester Owens, his second parents, AC and Ola Mae Bishop, and his big sister, Helen Bunton.

The treasured steps of LA Owens illuminates the lives of those dearest to him, a beautiful wife, Marilyn Holmes Owens, his pride and joy, two daughters, Shacreta Owens (Melvin) and Sharita Owens (Sam) and their mother, Irene Owens; his bonus children, Stacy Wilson, Paul D. Wilson Jr., and Michael D. Thomas; six grandchildren: Laaron Lazion Hunter, Samara Owens, Akia Britton, Maliyah Wilson, Paityn Wilson, and Paul D. Wilson, III; four devoted sisters, Ruby Jean Burton, Bettye Lofton, Shirley Ann Burton (Melvin), and Louise Joiner; and one sister – in – love, Sheila Collins; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins covering four generations and a long list of other relatives and friends.

As we bid our final goodbyes to LA, let us carry forward his indomitable spirit of love, compassion, and unwavering faith. May his memory continue to inspire and guide us as we navigate the steps of life, with the enduring light of his love forever shining upon us…
