Thank all of you for your kind words regarding my father. I had no idea this was on the internet until today. He was the kindest man I have ever met, and I know how lucky I am to be able to say that. Not a day goes by without thinking about him. Thanks again for all the well wishes and scripture references. I sure loved that man.

To the family I offer my deepest sympathy for your loss. I pray that you have fun memories of Mr. Bartak and rely upon them when he is missed the most. What a wonderful thing our Heavenly Father gave us ,MEMORY. May Mr. Bartak sleep in peace.

I remember when Bart returned from England and joined the band I was in. I was extremely impressed by his talent. I also remember that he would walk down Van Camp Avenue with his son Jim and pass by my home near the golf course. Jim would stop and play with my band trailer while Bart and I visited. Bart (besides me) was the last living member of the WOW Calling gang--those days are some of my fondest memories. Bart will be missed!

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.

I met Mr Bartak briefly at the College World Series in 1999 or so, and the circumstances were somewhat funny. I was there covering the Rice Owls for the university's alumni magazine. I was in the press box before a game when Mr Bartak came out of his booth and asked, out of the blue, if anybody had the music for the Rice fight song. I said that I could sing it for him, and he said he could try to write down the notes from that. So we went to his booth, he pulled up some blank sheet music and a pencil, and I sang the song while he tried to write the score. About halfway through he said something like "This is really tough -- you can't carry a tune." I was doing my best, but he was right! As I recall, we ran through it twice before he said he had what he needed -- whether he really meant that or just had enough of my voice was a little unclear. I left the booth, and a few minutes later Mr Bartak was playing a very good approximation of the Rice fight song on the Rosenblatt organ. I then called the band office at Rice and found someone who could send proper sheet music the next business day, but until then, Mr Bartak's hand-written score did the trick. He was a professional who cared about his craft but was also ready to improvise. I treasure the memory of that little episode with him in Omaha.
