Larry Black Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Unity Funeral Services - Corporate Offices on Feb. 25, 2026.
Larry William Black, a man whose hands built kitchens and whose heart built a legacy of unconditional love, passed away on February 22, 2026. He was 83 years old.

A Life of Service and Craft

Born in the Eastwood community to Masger and Katie Lee Short Black, Larry remained a lifelong fixture of the area he called home. A 1960 graduate of Pinehurst High School, Larry's commitment to his country began early; he joined the National Guard before even receiving his diploma. He served with pride for ten years as a Tank Commander and continued his fellowship with veterans as a member of the AB Sally American Legion Post 350 in Pinehurst.

For over 35 years, Larry was the face of Larry Black Custom Kitchens. As a "one of a kind" craftsman, he didn't just install cabinets; he designed the heart of the home for families across Moore County. His work was a reflection of his character: meticulous, reliable, and built to last.

A Legacy of Love

While his craftsmanship was well-known, Larry's true masterpiece was his family. On February 19, 1971, he married the love of his life, Sue McKenzie Black. Together, they modeled a loving, kind and boundless kind of hospitality, opening their home and hearts to over 40 foster children in addition to their own.

Larry's presence was a gift to those who knew him. He possessed a rare warmth that made everyone feel seen, heard, and welcomed. With a quick smile and a friendly face, he had a way of making you feel like a better person just by being near him.

Family

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers: Donnie, Wesley, and Tommy.

His memory will be cherished by his devoted wife, Sue; his children and their spouses: Patrisha Black, Molly Black, Laurie and Anton Zak, Mark Niewald, Jeff Niewald, Tim and Sherry Niewald, and Gayla and Julian Soto; and his brother, Wayne J. Black and sister in law, Betty of Whispering Pines and his sister in law and husband Laurie and David Mitchell.

He also leaves behind a vibrant legacy through his grandchildren: Austin, David, Mikayla, Molly, Myea, Mack, Jacob, Mykenzie, Sammy, Hadley, Milani, Brandon, Curtis, Christine, Colvin and his five great-grandchildren: Nia, Evelyn, Joey, Vinny, and Lenny.
