Larry Hanks Obituary

Larry Brent Hanks

1949-2025

Salt Lake City, UT-It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Larry "Brent" Hanks, who left us on February 6, 2025, at the age of 75 after complications with dementia. Born on March 12, 1949, to Richard and Marian Hanks, Brent was raised in the Marmalade District of Salt Lake City, where he developed a love for baseball and mischief that would last a lifetime. He graduated from West High School in 1967. Brent was a man defined by his deep connections with people, his love of music and a good party, and his joyful…albeit sometimes ornery spirit.

Brent served in the Vietnam War, having been drafted in 1969 and serving until late 1970. After returning home, he began a long and dedicated career with the U.S. Postal Service. Upon retirement, he found some of his most cherished years working at Alta Ski Resort.

In 1979, Brent married Terry Kelly, a union that blossomed into a lifelong friendship, and together they raised their beloved children, Christopher and Kelly. Brent also found great joy in helping raise David and Andy Aamodt, who became an important part of his family.

Music played an integral part of Brent's life, with Motown and Bruce Springsteen's songs serving as a soundtrack to his life. A true Jimmy Buffett "Parrot Head," Brent was never happier than when on vacation, sharing a delicious meal with family and friends. He loved books and was an avid baseball fan. Some of his best days were spent playing in neighborhood pick-up games, WBBA little league, the post office softball league, and coaching his kids.

Brent's definition of family extended beyond bloodlines: he believed in the importance of surrounding oneself with loved ones, and throughout his life, he was fortunate to gain many more people he considered his family.

Brent was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Marian Hanks; his brothers, Richard Lynn Hanks, and Jeffrey Hanks; and his stepson, Andy Aamodt.

He is survived by his children, Christopher (Stephanie) Hanks, Kelly (Chad) Farr, stepson David Aamodt, and his cherished grandchildren ("the apples of Pops' eye"): Cayden, Rose, Violet, Radley, Callum, and Prudence. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Brent's memory by gathering with loved ones, sharing a meal, and raising a glass in his name; he would have loved that. Also, feel inspired to donate to protect your public lands.

A Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held at a later date.

rent was a good childhood friend from elementary thru high school and beyond. We kept in touch through adult hood reflecting on the many incidents we got into in our teenage years. My most fond memories were working thru a few summers gardening, and realizing what a dependable hard worker he was. You will be deeply missed. I loved you as a true friend.

So many great memories of working with Brent at Alta, a true one of a kind. Bonds built on a shared love of Springsteen are strong, my friend. You will be missed.

Brent by default was part of our lives as he was a part of the Alta family. We have missed seeing him the past few years and are deeply saddened by his passing. He will always be a part of the crew. Be well wherever you have landed my friend.

"When he shall die,
Take him and cut him out in little stars,
And he will make the face of heaven so fine
That all the world will be in love with night
And pay no worship to the garish sun."
